Yet more legislation?

There is something that I really don't understand about calls for more restrictive firearms legislation.

Forgive me please if I mis-understand the situation in the US, but:

As I understand, people that use firearms for criminal purposes (assault, burglary etc) are breaking existing legislation, yes?
People that have felony convictions are prohibited from having firearms in any case, yes?

...So, what would it be about any new legislation that would make criminals want to obey it?

Do your criminal types make sure that they are only using 10 round magazines??!!! (have a guess how funny that piece of law looks from several thousand miles away!)

Do legislators understand that the only people who keep the laws are the law abiding (by definition), and have they also noticed that criminals don't seem to realise that laws are supposed to apply to them too?

Here's a suggestion for new piece of legislation for you: What about a law to make criminals obey the existing laws ;-)

Yeah. We don't understand it either.

It almost makes one think that gun control legislation might not be aimed at criminals, but at disarming law-abiding citizens.... Nah, couldn't be.

It is due to ignorance and incrementalism

Your point is well taken. I see two main reasons why we have calls for more and more laws:

1. Ignorance ... the average American has no clue about how many firearms laws we have now, and their breadth. So, people are easily fooled into 'we need another law'. The logic? 'Well, there is still crime, so the laws we have now must not be working. Therefore, we clearly need more laws.'. You an easily find Americans who believe that kids can buy automatic firearms on eBay. I tell people that it is foolish to call for more laws when they have no clue about what we have on the books.

2. Incrementalism ... the average anti-self defense gun bigot, who is involved in establishing more citizen control, is focused on taking one small step at a time. They get their hands slapped every now and then, so they've learned to take small bites at the apple. Gun shows this month, registration next month and on and on. The average American doesn't see this, or connect the events. This can be a very successful strategy, but it works both ways. Our goal is to reverse course on incrementalism, and start taking back yardage from the gun bigots.

Your logic is fine. But, you're dealing with some people that can't punch a ballot properly, and others who are playing politics with peoples' lives.

Makes one wonder who the criminals are. Since the legislators and representatives won't make an honest attempt to stop crime and only impose restrictions on the law abiding commoner, Maybe they are feeding the criminal element!

Does make you wonder. I don't believe in their being stupid. You don't get law degree's or make a political office by being stupid. Sheister, now that is another story.

"Did you really think that we want those laws to be observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want
them broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against - then
you'll know that this is not the age for beautiful gestures. We're after power and we mean it. You fellows
were pikers, but we know the real trick, and you'd better get wise to it. There's no way to rule innocent men.
The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals,
one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without
breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the
kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted - and you create a nation
of law-breakers - and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Rearden, that's the game, and
once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with."

Ive always added -Maybe they are the criminals!! attempting
to justify themselves or find out how many civil rights
and basic freedoms they can trample and rip up and rape
before someone will stand up to them aaaaand ofcourse
by not punishing those they say are the cause of most of our problems so as to have more reason to further restrict us and to hire more police whove never read the constitution more than once.
(No offense to those actively defending our rights but you know who Im talking about when I say those ignorant of our basic civil rights and sporting a shiny medal they call the law)
Ive no dought the legislaters know exactly who their
restricting every time they hatc a knew batch of laws
and enjoy widdling us down more and more.
