Yet ANOTHER Stupid Question...

If someone REALLY wanted to, and didn't care extremely much about the meat, could they go out and hunt deer with a 9mm handgun and just unload a magazine?

I understand that it wouldn't be practical, efficient, or even perhaps ethical.
I just want to know if it could be done.

[Oh the thoughts that go through your head sitting in a blind for 10 hours] :D

I guess if bambi is within 10 yards.
outside of 10 yards, he is running after the 1st shot, and your chasing him down for 3 hours...

If you can accurately work over a 4 inch circle at 25 feet to 25 yards, you could simply "double tap" at the vitals with a round like a winchester Silvertip and put down any deer in your sights...

Beyond 25 yards, I wouldn't expect the 1st or 15th round to handle business and 50yards, I wouldn't try it if I were starving... save the rounds until I were closer.

I figured it would be something like that.

Again, just a thought exercise.

I just had this image in my mind of a bunch of guys in bandannas and wife-beaters leaning out of a car just letting fly on a bunch of whitetail. Glocks turned sideways, of course. :barf:

The stream of consciousness is an interesting thing, no?

Some states have ammo limits. I don't know where you would find a 3 round magazine for a 9mm pistol (CA limit), but sure, it could be done.

So are you asking if a person could unload all the rounds they had at a deer? Of course it is physically possible. You have some reason to believe it isn't?

Glad Capt. Charlie didn't close this just yet...
Within' the parameters of a rounds effectiveness, and the ability of the shooter being proficient, most all rounds deemed legal (9mm usually is if handguns are allowed at all) can take most American game. But range of effective energy is the deciding factor... even if you could "dope" the shot... shoot a deer at 200 yards with a 9mm and you might not even knock off many hairs...

Same for ability... If you were to say "I ain't a real good shot but what about just shooting all 10 rounds of .30-06 at a deer from 50 feet, would that compensate for my poor skills?"... I would shake my head and help you find a range to shoot at and try to help you get your ability refined...

Ive unloaded a full clip of hollow points out of my G17 on a pack of hogs and killed two, hit probally four or five. Also shot a deer last year with it at about fifteen yards and it didnt go but maybe fifty befor it expired. 150 lb doe. I wouldnt try it past twenty yrads, plus ud just be wastin bullets. After the first shot is fired, more than likly the deer is goin to haul butt outta there

Alright. I think I'll stick to 00 Buck for now. (all the club I hunt with is allowed to use)

I'm still pumping that thing full of lead until it stops moving though. Like my buddy who introduced me to the sport said, 5 in the tube, 1 in the chamber, 6 in the deer. :D

What would you want to shoot a deer if you didn't want the meat?

Also I know this will ruffle a lot of feathers but #1 buckshot is much more effective than 00 or 000. . . and if you need 6 rounds of buckshot to take down a whitetail you need to spend more time at the range.

In your hypothetical, you suggested not caring all that much about the meat.
In your final statement you suggest 6 rds of buckshot being fired into the deer.
You live life however you choose, not my concern.
I prefer minimizing the waste of meat.I prefer making one shot for a quick clean kill.
When I have killed,I sit with the animal a while before I get my knife out.
I consider my place in the Circle of Life, and Death.
It is up to you to choose the memories you create.
I do not need to know your answer.I don't matter.Ask yourself:Why do you hunt?"
What I get from what you have written, you want a dramatic bloody mess.
I do believe in hunting.I also believe in respect for myself and the animal I am killing

Sitting for a long time in a deer blind is about like guard duty in the Army. All sorts of silly thoughts float through. BTDT, both places. :)

Enough. Let's get back to actual hunting stuff, okay?
