Yet another Mossberg model question...

While at the local gunshow yesterday, I saw a few Mossbergs that were tagged model 590 military version. If they were the military version, shouldn't they have been marked as 590A1 model? It's seems like there's always so much confusion when it comes to all the different models of mossy's. I think they were marked in the $380 range. Is there a 590 military model that's different than the 590a1? Any ideas? Thanks.

Maybe the only way to be sure is to check the five-digit product number of the shotgun. The true Mossberg 590A1s start with "51" (such as "51663"), but the regular 590s start with "50" (FYI, the DAO models start with "53").

My Mossberg 590A1 (#51663) has "M590A1" engraved on the left side of the receiver (the side opposite of the ejection port), in rather large letters (maybe 1cm high). The five-digit part number is only on the box.

The designation between 590 and 590A1 are just some minor differences in the two models, but I could be entirely wrong about that.

As far as I know, there are three major differences between the Mossberg 590 and 590A1:

1) The trigger guard: plastic on the 590, and metal on the 590A1.

2) The safety: plastic on the 590, and metal on the 590A1.

3) The barrel: heavier on the 590A1.
