Yet another carry thread

I'm not a newbie to firearms in general but I've only limited experience with hand guns, in spite of having a Maine CC permit years ago. Anyway, fast forward many years and I've developed a renewed interest in handguns and CC. I have a Glock 17 and Springfield XDM 9mm, neither of which I intend to CC with any regularity due to bulk, but I do intend to carry once all the necessary requirements have been met.

I've carried the XDM around my property (rural, semi-wooded 10 acres) in a concealed fashion just to get a feel for it and have some questions. Unfortunately the answer is probably going to fall under the same category as "best all-around handgun" but I'll give it a shot anyway.

Carrying on the hip (or small of the back) seems a bit problematic, especially in colder weather where I have layers of clothing, including a coat. Summer time I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum with nothing on but a single shirt (t-shirt style generally). Neither fashion seems conducive to a speedy draw if needed, with having to unzip coats and/or flip up clothing in order to get to the weapon.

Depending on weather clothing can range from a single shirt, to shirt and jacket, to shirt, sweater, and heavy winter coat. Environment can range from strictly inside, outside, or transitions from one to the other many times a day. Naturally this would include putting on and taking off various articles of clothing.

None of this is news to you guys who have done this for years, but it's new to me, and one thing I'd rather avoid is going through a small warehouse of holsters and clothing before I find out what works. Been there and done that on more hobbies than I care to remember.

It seems to me that some sort of shoulder carry would be the easiest and most accessible system to use, while still remaining concealed, and remain relatively independent of the clothing being worn. Hopefully this makes some sort of sense. "My" thought is a Crossbreed holster for when a small of the back carry is desired, and some sort of shoulder style carry other times. The jury is out on those t-shirt deals that have a built in holster. Rather pricey for what it is IMO.

Ok, now that I've made a short story long, my question... :)

What do YOU think is the best all around, all weather, all situation system(s) for carrying a compact sized (not sub-compact) weapon?

I live in Maine and I carry OWB probably 95+% of the time. I'll pocket carry or use an ankle holster when circumstances don't allow a hip holster. I carry a full or CCO size 1911 (hip), a j-frame (ankle or pocket), and occasionally a Kel-tec .380 (pocket).

I've used shoulder holsters but I'm a big guy and they're just not all that comfortable for me.

My choice (at the moment) for carry is the new Springfield XDm Compact in .40. I like that I can have a fairly stout round in a 3.8" barrel with a relatively compact form factor and yet can just change the clip and get a nice full size grip. I'm sure there are arguments for and against this model, which I'm more than willing to listen to, but I figure that's a different thread. Second choice I think would be the Glock 17 I already have, but I'd rather have something a bit smaller in a bit larger caliber.

Where abouts in Maine do you live? I live in Great Lakes, Rockland, and Brunswick. Spent about 7 yrs working at BIW in Bath.

I carried a compact Glock 23 (.40) and now carry a CCO 1911(Essentially a Compact 1911 .45). Both on the hip inside the waistband (IWB) further back kinda over my right buttcheek.

At 5'11" and 135lbs I am far from a big guy and I can conceal them both well enough to not make people curious.

I carry my Taurus 24/7 in between my zipper and front pants pocket in a blackhawk own that is one size larger then needed.

This let's the gun sit lower on my waistline. I can sit, drive, bend over, and walk with no problem

I find shoulder holsters uncomfortable and rather ungainly. Small of the back carry is also uncomfortable while sitting, and it takes a lot of practice to be able to draw without muzzle sweeping either your own torso or people around you. With SOB carry, it is also very easy to have your shirt or coat tail ride up without you knowing it.

I settled on IWB at 4:00 or so after playing around with more imaginative ideas. It is easy to conceal, easy to draw, and easy to keep track of your handgun. Lots of shirts can be worn with the tail out and a tank-style undershirt beneath. Jackets and sport coats naturally cover it. I am a medical professional, and lab coats with slits for access to pants pockets are easy to find. My advice: Don't try to reinvent the wheel. IWB strongside is most popular because it works pretty darn well.

Tailgator: Great points. I did a quick google on MOB/SOB which yielded some great info on why it's generally a bad idea. I'm more than happy to defer to the more experienced. What's your opinion on an IWB/OWB setup in a cross draw configuration?
