Yet another .22LR ammo thread for Mark pistols

I wanted to get people's opinions about using Standard Velocity rounds in Mark IIIs. Lately this is often all that is available. Talking about rounds in the 1050 fps or so range. CCI Standard Velocity is 1070 for example.

In the past I have usually used 1200-1250fps ammo in my Marks. What do you all think about the 1050 or so stuff?

Comments?

I can't speak to the reliability on a Mark 3, but I have two mark 2s that occasionally don't cycle with standard velocity CCI ammo. They both like to run with high velocity ammo like mini mags.

standrd vellocity amo is good

the standard velocity is maybe more accurate your not going to get full velocity from a pistol anyway I think you were shooting a pistol? Hits count more than misses no matter how fast the miss was going when it went by

A what pistol? A Ruger? They're made to shoot standard velocity ammo. Dislike Ruger .22's myself, but for the entry level target pistols they are they'll shoot any ammo they will shoot, just fine. Of course, you have to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo that will both shoot well and cycle the action.

It cycles my Mark II and 10/22 and is accurate, but not as accurate as Velocitor or MM's.
It does tend to gum up the top front of the Mark II magazines with excess lube and will cause failures to feed after a while. Mineral spirits cleans that right up.

CCI Standard Velocity works great in my 22/45 MkII. Very accurate. As mentioned above, it will gum up the magazine, so occasionally wipe off the lips and follower and you’ll be good.

The Ruger Mark III (512 Target) that I recently sold had some issues with stove pipes and FTE's. I don't know what the cause was as I sold it before really finding out (with instructions to the shop selling it to make this aspect clear).

The only thing I found that seemed to address the issue over a few mags (FTE's could happen several times in one mag, then not at all) was gripping the gun rigidly like my life depended on it. It almost seemed like limp-wristing and my uber-firm grip seemed to help.

So, in other words, based on my limited gun function knowledge, I'd guess that the recoil spring was too stiff for the ammo and it started its return into battery before the case was fully out, or before the ejector could have done its job.

Therefore, I think that faster ammo could have helped, and in answer to the OP, I believe that the standard ammo did not improve the situation.

Mr. Pond, usually FTE issues in a Mark pistol are caused by a bad extractor. Any time one of my Mark pistols has stovepipes or similar issues, it gets a new Volquartsen extractor and firing pin. This always does the trick.

I'll be trying some CCI 1070fps ammo tomorrow. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Standard velocity ammunition will give the best accuracy but it generally costs a little more. It is worth the cost IMHO because the quality is better. I have sort of 3 Ruger Mark pistols that I shoot SV in them exclusively. In all of the years of shooting, I never had a reliability issues but if a pistol did, I would suspect it needed cleaned and lubricated. Rugers are known for reliability and I have went entire match seasons without an alibi. YMMV

I have four Ruger MK II's and they all shoot CCI SV accurately, and reliably. I usually shoot bulk Federal, but if I want a little better accuracy go to the SV stuff.

I've been using the Eley HV for years in both my .22 pistols and, rifles. Zero problems and, very accurate.
