Yes, another 870 question

I am investing in my first gun within the next week! I'm looking into the Model 870 Express Super Magnum Synthetic, but I have a few questions (yes I have searched alot).

1) Mel Cotton's sporting goods wants $411 out the door (this includes tax and the background check fee). That doesn't seem way over priced does it?

2) I keep reading about the key locked saftey, but I haven't been able to find how much it would cost to have a gunsmith convert it. I am mechanically inclined but have little experiance with guns as of yet, and figured I'd be better of to have a gunsmith do it.

3) The dimples that restrict capacity........what capacity do they restrict? Is it the number of shells you can load into the gun at one time?

Thanks for the replys

1. i bought mine from bass pro in md for $346.XX.

2. should less than $20 in parts, and i dont believe its that difficult to do.

3. basically, the "dimples" make it harder to add a tube extension. you have to dremel them out to do so. out of the box you can do 4+1 3 or 2-3/4" shell or 3+1 3-1/2" shell.

i love my 870 super mag.

870

That is a lot cheaper than a Rem 870 Marine Magnum. Personally I would go with the Rem 870 Police. But I don't have anything yet. Any 870 would be fine I am told.

Not your first question, but if you NEED a 3.5" 12 ga, what you REALLY NEED is a 10 ga. If you need to hoist that much payload, it's better done in a bigger bore. Most folks can do 99% plus of what needs to be done with a shotgun with 2 3/4" shells, the 3" maggie numbs will handle all but about .01% of the waterfowl and turkeys.

1) Yes. Check at Dick's if this is the gun you gottagottagotta have. They were running it on special, dunno if they still are but it was a good bit cheaper.

2)Parts that need to be changed out (safety switch, spring and detent) are a total of $9 plus shipping from Remington, it is a pretty simple job.

3)The magazine tube dimples have to be removed before you can use a magazine extension. But if you remove them you have to find an alternate way to keep your magazine cap on tight. Best bet is to buy an older Express with no magazine tube dimples, or a used 870P, or a used Wingmaster if you want to use a magazine extension. That will also get you around worrying about the plastic trigger plate and the locking safety as well, since none of those models have those particular "features" either.

i have a 870 super mag trky camo and payed $450 for it , but it was camo and came with a extra full choke. What are u going to use the gun for, you may want to get it in camo

I'm going to use it for shooting skeet (for fun not competition) and for home/camp site defence, so I have no need to worry about camo.

lee lapin, thanks for your thoughts on shell size. I really have no need for 3.5" shells, I just want a versital gun. It's hard to tell from remington's website, but can a 870 express synthetic use 2 3/4" and 3" shells? If so that would probably suite me just fine and I'd save about $50 MSRP

Thanks for the feedback guys, feel free to keep any opinions comming!

Most of my 870's are 3" guns. I use them as you plan to, that is for clay busting and HD. I have never fired a 3" shell in my life.
All my ammo, bird, buck and slug is 2 3/4" and I trust it to do what I need.
There are a bunch of good deals on those 3 1/2" guns though and I am sure that they work fine but were it my dough, I'd buy a Police model or used Wingmaster.

I bought my 870 express combo (field, and slug barrel) for under $300 from walmart,it's not a super magnum, but I dont need one. If all your going to do is shoot clay neither do you.

The dimples that you refer too, act as the plug that limits the number of shells that can be loaded into the shotgun.

I dont understand want you need done to the safty. Mine is just a lock which wont let you take off the safty. I turned it off and havent touched it.

I love my 870, good choice

I've now started to consider the 870P due to some of the posts. Sorry if these are total newbie questions, but I have one more. The 870p is appealing to me because it has a regular saftey and a shorter barrel, but with an 18" barrel wont skeet shooting be out of the question?

Also can is the stock wood on the 870P or can you get synthetic?

Some clubs won't allow short barrels on the line for various reasons. But you CAN break birds with a short barrel (if you can hit 'em that is) and it is good practice in using the gun in its HD mode. Spare/extra longer (26- 28") barrels are available if you want one for small game/wingshooting/clay games, and a good 870 with one short barrel and one longer barrel is a great combination and takes advantage of the basic versatility/modularity of the gun.

Any magnum receiver 870 fitted with a barrel having a 3" chamber can handle 3" shells. As I said, by far the vast majority of folks get along fine with 2 3/4" loads only.

870Ps come with either wood or synthetic furniture, it's no big deal to change out to get what you want.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'm going with a Remington 870P synthetic with the 20" barrel and the Speedfeed Sport Synthetic Stock & Fore-end to start me off. Then once I get some more funds I'll pick up a longer barrel for shooting skeet. Thanks again

I changed out my safety and it was not too hard. It helped to download the schematic of the trigger group if you don't have one, then just take your time and watch how everything comes apart. It took me about 30 min. of a Sat. afternoon and it works great. You may also want to search this site about the safety change. good luck.
