Yaqui slide

What are your thoughts on this style holster? I'm in/out of firearm restricted areas all day and don't like paddle style holster. Thinking this might be a good alternative. Stow the pistol and leave the slide as is; pretty unobtrusive.

I like them, but your gun might get pushed up out of the holster sitting in a car.

Nice minimal concept though. I gave a friend of mine one to try, and he left it on while doing a few in-home service calls, and nobody even noticed.

+1 On that.

My fave: CompTac 2 o' clock; cannot say enough good things about it. The clip is very secure, yet allows you to remove the entire unit (holster and gun) for placement elsewhere: No need to un-holster then remove the holster. This is of course, IWB.

This style holster also works very well as a cross draw holster; mine has no cant to it, some do.

I personally do like this style for .45s. Use mine for both cross draw and strong side. Cross draw is very handy for sitting, especially in vehicles; I can draw with a seatbelt on with very minimal movement.

What is funny is that just recently I purchased an Bianchi IWB for a .45 and have a Galco Yaqui slide for the same gun, the Yaqui was more $. I did get the Bianchi on sale; and after looking at ammo and component prices I was excited to actually see something firearm related reasonably priced these days for a change.

my three

One's a leftie.

Other than the ease one can push the gun out by its muzzle, they are another fine tool in one's carry options bag.

I've used Yaqui slide holsters. My only problem with them is that you'd better be sure your front sight doesn't snag when you draw.

OK, there's another problem: The two I have, both from Dillon, creak like an old saddle when I walk. Might just be that design, I don't know.

I love the yaqui slide. It's small, light, and gives GREAT access to the weapon. Most yaquis have no cant, which I really like.

caveats:
1. The gun can be pushed up by the muzzle. The holster has to hold it TIGHT.
2. I feel it doesn't hold the gun as tight against my body as a full coverage holster does.
3. If your cover garment rides up on a full coverage, all you see is leather. If it rides up on a yaqui, you see the bare muzzle - flashing.

I currently have one for my S&W SW99OL until the holsters I have ordered for it come in. I bought the SW99OL to have a lighter weight carry gun than my Colt Combat Commander. After carrying the S&W last weekend I will just stick with the Colt until I get some decent holsters for the S&W. I am a rather big guy and every time I sat down in a chair, including the barber chair, I snagged barrel and pushed the gun up. It never came completely out of the holster but it was noticeable and a very uncomfortable feeling.

slide holster

Years ago when a State Narc I carried a Browning Highpower in one of these rigs that was before all the "wonder nine" craze. I really liked it I would remove my weapon and store in my desk drawer inside the office. I did not have to remove the empty holster. Never really felt safe with a clip on holster for duty weapon

I carry a Walther PP with a Galco yaqui paddle holster, also use a yaqui for my Browning hi-power and find it to be the best holster for that weapon.

My only complaint is if you wear pants with rivits (Levis). The rivits will screw up your finish of your firearm.

I have the Galco Jak slide and it works great. I am able to use it for 3 different pistols. The belt is inserted through the exterior belt slots, resulting in a holster that pulls the pistol in close to the body for easy concealment and excellent comfort. (I stole Galco's description). I have never had a pistol ride up with my Jak slide and I use it daily. I like it a lot.

Mines from El Paso Saddlery.

I like them, I can carry different size 1911s and my BHP in the same holster. Even the square slide of my SIGs fit in it nice.

I saw where Japle mentioned snagging your front site while drawing the pistol. The best cure for this is to bring the pistol straight up out of the holster. Which you should do anyway when drawing from any strong side holster.

I like minimal holsters, such as the JIT Slide from Don Hume, etc. I've never had a problem with the gun being pushed out, but I don't carry a full-size gun, either.

If you are needing to take your gun on and off all day, I would suggest Something along the lines of
Galco Matrix.asp
Galco SideSnapScabbard.asp

I have a Matrix for a 1911 that I use for range-use and am very happy with it.

I never had my gun move out of position from sitting in a car or otherwise while wearing a Yaqui slide holster during the hundreds of hours I wore it.

Good procedure on the range. Not always the first priority when you need the gun BAD!
Yanking on a snagged gun = crummy idea when someone's trying to kill you. ;)

I only carry my 1911s in a Yagui slide.Been doing so since around 1976.I've owned several brands and liked them all.YMMV.tom.

A simplistic, easy to conceal holster. No muss no fuss.

However, I'm often reluctant to use one due to the lack of protection given to the slide, front sight and the crown of the barrel.

I did try the Galco Matrix version. It prints much to easily with me, and due to the rigidness of the "thermoplastic" it isn't very comfortable. It is occasionally worn around the house.

Does anyone know if a standard leather Yaqui is any better? Recommended brands? Galco? Kirkpatrick? Don Hume? Desantis?

It would be interesting to know if Col. Cooper actually used them outside of Gunsite.
