Y2K Darwin Award Candidate

Looks like a makeup job too me. There are no signs of jawbone, and the blast area extends by his eyes in a very unusual manner. Also, it would be extremely hard to stop bleeding from this, and with the exposed wound like they show there, it's not too damn likely he'd actually be sitting there like that without blood gushing everywhere. Also, I doubt he'd be conscious.

I conclude, this is a fake.

There is jawbone showing - look at the lower left. You can distinctly see at least 2 molars and a piece of jawbone about an inch and a half long. You can also see a couple of upper molars on the right (his left). And there's plenty of blood running off the tongue, that I can see.

I conclude, fake or not, I wouldn't want this happening to me.

Interesting. Looks phony if for no other reason than he is conscious. That and the tongue seems to have remained intact, which is highly unlikely given the extent of the damage to everything else.

On the other hand, I don't see anything overtly "synthetic" about the photo either. I doubt if someone could have lived through that, but stranger things have happened.

Doesnt look fake to me. That looks like hey blew the bottom of his face off.
The depth is wrong - there is no way that that could be a mask... besides - look around the room there... looks like a hospital to me.
The fact he is alive and smiling for the camera is amazing. I dont see how that could be repaired. I don't see how he is still alive.
I have another picture of a similar accident - but that was fatal.

OK, on closer examination, this is a surprisingly clean wound. No burn marks that you would expect from an explosion. He also seems to be in an emergency room with some pretty complacent ER folks behind him. I don't know much about emergency medecine, but I would think there would be some kind of all out attempt to control the bleeding.

Fake.

Fake or not, it still made me queezy.

I remember looking through my dad's medical journals and manuals and seeing all the facial wounds pictured there. There were worse, but not by much.

I don't believe it's fake.

George, he can't help but smile... (((shudder)))

There is not much there between that damage and his brainpan. He blew his whole oropharyngeal region out, and blew off his jaw and his entire maxillary and nose area (implying a huge amount of force), so that would imply that there should be some serious damage in the other direction as well, namely the direction of his brain, which is not so well protected from that angle of attack.

It does not appear that he is even intubated. Is he dead and just appears alive? It seems that the very first thing you wold do to a guy like that on scene is intubate him. How is he breathing and not drowning on his own blood? Why aren't they stopping that huge amount of bleeding instead of standing around taking pictures? Many questions.

I cannot see how a mechanism of injury could cause all that damage and not blast fragments etc into the brain. The blood looks a little oddly colored than from what I have seen from such injuries. I have my doubts that the pic is not altered somehow.
But, I am not a doctor, I am only pretending to be one. I am a certified EMT though and worked in a ER among other things so I guess I should give myself some credit though.

I'd say that it looks rather as though he bit down on a #8 blasting cap. One small detail which make me think it's real is that if you look carefully you see what seems to be a lip-ring on the flesh on the far left side of his wounded area. Moral: DON'T BITE EXPLOSIVES!!! Yuuuck!
