can anyone tell me if 300 gr. xtp mag bullets(.452) expand well on whitetail deer being pushed by 2- 50 gr pellets of t7? the hornady site says they will open, but i like to hear from people who have hit deer with them.they shoot great out of my cva wolf.where i hunt my shots are 100 yards or less.

My hunting buddy uses XTPs but I don't know if they are the 300 grn or the 250 grn. He has never lost a deer yet that he shot with them.

To be honest with you, I personally wouldn't care if they opened up or not. A 1/2" hole does plenty of damage on its own. Think of it this way. If you shot a deer with a 30-30 and the bullet mushroomed up to 1/2", you'd be happier than a cop in a donut shop. The .50 cal XTP starts out already that size.

I shoot a Savage muzzleloader.
Among us Savage guys, the 300 XTP is one of the great all-time bullets. Great expansion.
Now, we are getting a lot more fps with the smokeless than you are getting with 100 grains of 777.
In fact, the problem we have with the Savage on many bullets, is too much expansion, due to the hyper-speeds we push these bullets.

I would suggest to you that you stick with the regular 300 XTP.
In fact, you would do real well with the 250 XTP with 100 gr of 777.

What I am saying is, if you use the 300, use the regular 300XTP. We are not getting good expansion with our Savages with the 300XTP mag, and at your slower velocities, you won't either.

I really think you would be happy with the regular 250 XTP.

I've used them in 158g (357 mag) in my 45 cal tc hawken and it done a number on a 8pt buck . two steps and it was down at 65 yards. I'll use them in my tc pro hunter this year.:)
