XD9 - Squishy trigger?

Hi all,

I just went to the range today and shot my XD mod 2 9mm today along with my Walther PPS 9mm. As usual, I love the PPS. Great fit in my hands, great sight picture, wonderful trigger, etc. And then there's my XD. Several times now I've taken it and been unimpressed with how squishy (for lack of a better word) the trigger is. I can shoot it accurately if I take my time with each shot, and at close range confrontational distances, but I always am much happier to pick up my PPS.

So I've also promised myself I wouldn't ever sell any of my guns, but I feel like I might be considering it for this case. My wife wants to get a SIG P938 and it could help go towards that. But I'm torn. The XD was my first pistol, and it's the only weapon we have that has a higher capacity (PPS carries 7 & 8 +1 versus the XD at 16+1).

So I'm just looking for thoughts on should I sell the XD? Or is there a way to modify it?

Pros:
+ Money towards sig p938 (wife's ccw)
+ I don't shoot it well and barely ever carry it.

Cons
- Didn't want to sell any firearms (and it's my first pistol)
- Only pistol that's 10+ capacity

That's all I could come up with now.

The next couple weapons we'll be buying is: 1911, sig p938, Combat Rifle (ak47 or AR15), and a hi-capacity 9mm full size pistol like a CZ or VP9.

For about $100 you can put a powder river trigger kit in the XD. I had their trigger in my XD and it was outstanding. The only reason I don't have the gun any more is because I gave it to my daughter.

That seems like a good fit for fixing my problem with it. Again I don't really want to sell anything. I like everything except the trigger pretty much. Though if I start modding it I might switch the sights as well. I got the gun for a little over $400 so upgrading it with $100 isn't a deal breaker for me.

I didn't care for my XD either, or the Glock for that matter. Awful trigger mush. I'm much happier with my P01.

I actually do like the gun, I think it's a good weapon, and I think I'd rather fix and keep it then sell it, tho the trade does seem tempting I'll admit. I don't like glocks though. And for sure I will be getting more guns in the future- it's just a matter of when.

Does your wife not currently have a firearm of "her own"? If not, (and assuming money is tight) I would probably give up the XD to help fund her desires/needs. It's important for her to be able to defend herself and I suggest always feeding a loved one's desire for self-preservation capability.

If the Mod 2 is your first handgun, chances are you don't have a whole lot of "miles on it" (total rounds fired) or experience with handguns.

If you sell it, you'll probably take a beating.

There are things you can do, but you probably shouldn't.

Perception of trigger quality is an individual thing. And it also matters what kind of shooting you are doing. If I am shooting either of my XD guns slowly and deliberately, I perceive each and every stage of the trigger pull. pushing the trigger safety, take up back to the sear, pushing the striker block, sear release. If I am shooting quickly, I perceive the very same trigger as one crisp click.

There's lots of variety in the feel of striker fired pistol triggers.
Some put more pressure on the striker before firing, and seem to have the more "mushy" feel to the triggers.
I didn't care for the standard XD as much as some others, either.
But there are other versions of the XD available.
If you like the gun in general, try some of the alternate models.

I have an XD9 subcompact that was hard to shoot because of the trigger. I put in a Powder River Ultimate Match Competition trigger kit and it made a world of difference. Short takeup, 3.75# pull and nice reset. I got the kit with the sear, sear safety, sear spring, trigger spring and trigger. You can get less expensive kits too. I give them an A+ recommendation.

Edit: I also have an XDS-40 and that has a much better trigger than the original XD9.

She has a .22lr single action revolver, and she also likes our S&W m10 as well, but she doesn't actively carry a CCW. She liked the SIG p938 when we rented it and we're gonna get it for her soon.

True.. I'd estimate between 1000-1500 rounds. I can shoot it if I focus but any quick reaction shooting I do I'm way off center. Unlike with the PPS.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll look into that upgrade as well.

Any other recommendations or thoughts are welcome!

If I were to sell, how much do used pistols go for? 80% of retail? Better? Worse?

In good shape, $350 - $400.

Can you explain this mushy feeling? Is it during the takeup, striker release or overtravel part of the trigger pull? I think you are saying it has too much or bad feeling creep during the actual striker release.

A Powder River or Springer Precision kit with sear, might be the trick.

I'm thinking I'd much rather keep it but modify it with a better trigger.

The trigger has a good bit of travel before it meets the resistance of the break. But instead of a clean break, as you apply more pressure to fire the gun, the trigger keeps moving even further back as you apply more pressure. But by bit until it finally clicks. As you slowly release the trigger to find the reset it does the same thing. Trickling forwards until it resets. But it isn't even smooth.

I don't know if that makes sense or not... I'm just gonna replace it.

So options so far are:.
- powder river kit
- Powder river ultimate match competition trigger kit
- spring precision kit with Sear

Any other recommendations?

I haven't shot a Glock, XD or M&P that didn't have a "squishy" trigger. My main gripe is the roughness, if you could smooth it out it wouldn't be hard to shoot. I'll note that I shoot revolvers so the long pull doesn't bother me but they need to be smooth.

I have a Powder River trigger in my XDm it's amazing for a striker gun, this is coming from a guy that owns many great triggered guns.
