XD Grip Safety

It's amusing that the very same guys who detest and criticize the grip safety on an XD just love 1911's. I never heard a complaint about that grip safety. I have 2 XD's and never had a problem with either.

grip safety

I always found that a bit ironic also. I have an XD 40 and have never had any issues with it. Of course, it only has about 40,000 rounds through it so ......I will report back when i get it broke in :)

I like the grip safety on my XDS 45. When I carry it IMB it's at about 4 oclock and hard to see the holster. I can re-holster without worrying about snagging the trigger and shooting myself in the butt. I just put my thumb on the rear of the slide when holstering.

Some people do complain about the 1911 grip safety. And, you see a lot of "1911-ish", sort-a clone guns that don't have grip safeties. I'm thinking of Stars, Sig and Colt single action .380s.

"But but but, that's unpossible. They always break withing 5000 rounds, which no one ever reaches anyway because serious shooters don't use the XD."

I can't say I've heard any 1911 fans complain specifically about the grip safety on the XD line.

I'm not a fan of the grip safety, but I can deal with it. I'm less of a fan of the XD's striker retaining roll pin that likes to snap. At least some companies make HD replacements.

Oh, really? I have never heard those complaints....must be few and far between...very few.

I locked out the grip safety on my 1911. It depends on your size and shape of your hand. My normal grip ? my fingers don't touch the wooden slabs so I now have nice uncheckered rosewood !

I think yeah, it's a pretty rare problem.

I replaced those pins in my two. The older one had been dry fired a lot, and that pin was bent a bit.

There's a gunsmith on XDtalk I recall that had taken Springfield's elusive armor's course. I recall him writing that that pin is a sacrificial part, intended for occasional replacement.

I hate grip safeties altogether. The 1911 gets a pass on it for being a classic, plus the only reason it had one was because the Army requested it. Browning's original design didn't have it. The XD doesn't get a pass because it's not a classic, it's a modern handgun with a redundant and unnecessary feature.

I don't mind grip safeties. They seem to have worked out on the 1911 design, and I've never had any trouble with one. If I had to choose between a grip safety and thumb safety on a carry gun, I'd take the grip safety.

Lots of folks don't like 1911 grip safeties. It used to be a pretty common modification to have them pinned down or simply wrap tape around the grip to deactivate them. Adding the grip safety wasn't Browning's idea and virtually no other guns have used them. None of Browning's other designs have them. There doesn't seem to be any issues with those designs. Most people who like 1911's tolerate them, that doesn't mean that most wouldn't rather they not be there.

I'd argue that even with 1911's they have prevented the gun from firing when the operator needed the gun to fire more often than they have prevented the gun from firing when the operator didn't want it to fire. The XD grip safety isn't nearly as well designed. I owned an XD briefly. The poorly designed grip safety was the primary reason I didn't keep it.

I have a custom Colt 1911 and an SA Mil Spec (45s)... Also an XD9 and Xdm Compact (9mms) I like shooting them all.

If I am not conscious of how I grip the mil spec with the standard GI type GS I may not depress it enough and the pistol will not fire. Especially with a thumb high on safety grip which I prefer. This is NO fault of the gun. But I am just getting into IDPA Comp and it could be a factor.

I am in the process of having my smith notch the GS tang on the mil-spec for a commander hammer and desensitize the GS so it will depress with less grip pressure. Or I might get a beaver tail GS like the Colt only with a .220 radius for the SA....I'M going to discuss the possible options with him this week.

The XD pistols have been 100%.It doesn't matter how I grip these pistols in regards to the grip safeties... I kinda like the grip safeties. When I re holster these XDs I press down on the rear of the slide and frame never touching the grip safety. It seems like an extra measure of safety. Maybe not necessary but I know me and I'm prone to brain farts :)

It is the very reason I'd always pick a Springfield over a Glock.
While not extremely common, cases in which lint or other debris has gotten under a grip safety have made guns totally inoperable until cleaned. That's why I don't like them. It's a potential failure point that's totally unnecessary if you know how to be safe with a handgun and yet it's being sold as a feature.

The grip safety makes a heck of a lot more sense to me than the trigger safety on most every striker fired gun these days. If something gets caught on the trigger of a Glock, M&P, etc., it can still easy discharge. The chances of something getting caught on both the trigger of an XD and the back of the grip seem, to me, to be a lot less.
