Ah, the recurring claim that you could shoot down a plane with a .50 rifle, so they must be terrorist weapons. Has anybody actually attempted to shoot down a plane with a .50 rifle? Nope, not that I'm aware of anyway. Even over there in the ME, where there is arguably much more terrorist activity? Nope. Funny, but the terrorists who want to shoot down planes are using readily available (to the terrorists, anyway) shoulder fired SAM's for that, seeing as they are much more effective at the job, being designed for such, not to mention that they are just about as portable.

What a bunch of gun grabbing garbage! Bah!

Last March, over on ar15.com i ran a google / whois operation on 50caliberterror.com

they have since that time, adjusted their records on whois space for stealth.

someone with a member account on Ar15.com could prolly search out my post under "dr_Zox"

'50 Caliber Terror' Website Launched to Warn of Terrorist Access to .50 Caliber Sniper Rifles in the United States

CHICAGO, March. 1 /U.S. Newswire/ -- On February 28th, Freedom States Alliance launched the website http://www.50caliberterror.com to inform the public that terrorists can buy .50 caliber sniper rifles in the United States easier than a person can buy a handgun.

Because .50 Caliber Sniper Rifles pose a threat to shooting down civilian airliners on landing or take-off, Freedom States Alliance, a group of state organizations, is working to limit their availability to the military and law enforcement personnel.

The only state that currently restricts the ownership and possession of .50 Caliber Sniper Rifles is California, where Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a law last fall that does not allow civilian purchase of such weapons of terror.

New Jersey and Illinois, among other states, are considering such legislation. In Illinois the "Anti-Terrorism and Aviation Protection Act" to restrict the sale of .50 Caliber Sniper Rifles to military and law enforcement personnel has been introduced.

"Our strategy against terrorists, to quote President Bush, must be one of pre-emption," says Thom Mannard, Executive Director of the Illinois Council, a participant in Freedom States Alliance. "The manufacturers and sellers of .50 Caliber Sniper Rifles advertise and sell the terrorist weapons on the Internet and in catalogues, making them readily available throughout the world for terrorists to view and for terrorist agents in the United States to purchase."

"Our message to those who oppose stopping terrorists from easily buying .50 Caliber Sniper Rifles that can shoot down planes landing and taking off is this: You are either for taking pre-emptive action against terrorism or you are for enabling the terrorists," Mannard warned.

Armored piercing bullets can be used with .50 Caliber Sniper Rifles, further endangering civilian aviation, fuel tanks and military and police vehicles.

.50 Caliber Sniper Rifles can shoot accurately from over a mile away, thus being capable of being deployed outside the security perimeter of airports.

Americans wanting to can keep .50 Caliber Sniper Rifles out of the hands of terrorists can sign up for further information at http://www.50caliberterror.com.

Because we all know that police need to shoot down airliners and the military has nothing more effective than a rifle

These guys are so far out there I initially thought it was a parody site and they were just being facetious and sarcastic.

I was watching that video down at the lower end of the page. I am not familiar with the recoil of a .50 cal, but I figured it would be much greater. Can you really take the kick with one arm? That seems like he was shooting blanks, and simulating the muzzle jump.

I seem to remember a Vietnam Vet telling me that the Vietnamese and American jets would take .50 MG fire, putting tens or hundreds of holes in the plane, and it would still fly.

I'm sorry

I thought this was a new issue, since the NRA magazines just reported on it this month; didn't know it was old news. In any event, thank you very much, dz, for the extensive info...know thy enemy.

I liked the news clip with the guy saying at the end, "You wouldn't want to see what happens to a person hit with it". Well, I have. Twice. Wasn't that impressed after being "conditioned" by Hollywood to know what a person hit by a .50 looks like. You know, like hamburger.

There is nothing magical about a .50 and damage. If you do not hit soething vital (and commercial planes have triple redundent hydro systems) you are just making holes. The plane will not explode. Punctured fuel tanks do not burst into flame. The engine will not fall of the wing.
Another hysterical atempt by what looks to be a dangerous fake trying to drum up a crisis.

Their website claims that Bin Laden purchased 10 .50 cal rifles. What they didn't say is that Bin Laden was our second party ally at the time and it was probably provided by the U.S. military to fight the Soviets. They also claim that the manufacturers are selling them to people outside of the country. I thought that they could only sell to someone outside of the country with federal permission???

The whole site is a bunch of cr@p.

This is like the BS that says you are supporting terrorism if you buy weed.

The only thing keeping me from buying one is the fear of potentially having to turn it in if they pass one of those type bans.

I feel the opposite. Buy one before they are banned and I will most likely be grandfathered and if I don't then the value will rise for registered .50's beyond what I can afford. (just like fully auto class III)

The barrett I shot was not bad, not bad at all. But then, it weighed a ton, with a massive brake.

The reason why I could not fire it one armed is that I am not *strong* enough to lift and AIM that sucker!

think of it this way..

if a .50caliber sniper weapon was all that was required to shoot down a plane.... why the HELL did the german's have thousands of 88's and other ack ack guns?????
