what is the best way to sell a used rifle? If I post it on the forum in the proper area what is the best way to handle payment? I do not have pay pal. How can you be discrete with your home address? Is it worth the hassle?

Paypal account wouldn't work anyway. If they ever found it was for a firearms transaction they would close your account.

Best way is to meet up in mutually safe area and take cash only.

I was thinking about posting on this forum asking for s postal money order and seeing if my ffl can ship to buyers ffl. Can do as you advise for buyer in my state still hinkey about giving my address.

You don't need to give your address. Do as Doyle says and meet in a mutually safe area (i.e. not your home, not their home). When I bought a rifle from a guy, we met in the police parking lot in a town many miles from either of our homes. Another time I did it, we met in a large parking lot of a strip mall area. I would however CCW if you legally can.

yes I have CCW permit and if in person I would require them to have one also as "background check" don't know about posting in local trading post and dealing with a hundred calls was thinking about an internet prosses and shipping to FFL. But not sure how to go about it.

Rifles are easy. You can mail it to the buyer's FFL yourself through the post office, ref 432.1 (d).

1) Post rifle for sale.

2) Have buyer send USPS or Moneygram (Wal Mart) money order.

3) Take money order to local post office or Wal Mart and get CASH in your hand.

4) Box up rifle and mail through post office. Usually costs around $35-40 with insurance.

It's important that you make sure that you always do #3 before you do #4, or you may learn about fake money orders the hard way!

Although this is basically correct, there are a couple of technicalities that the OP should be aware of.
  • Only a FFL (i.e. licensed gun dealer or manufacturer) can lawfully mail a firearm "capable of being concealed on the person", to quote the US Postal regulations. Although this provision most directly addresses handguns and certain NFA firearms, it can also apply to an AR lower receiver, because a lower can be assembled into a rifle OR a handgun. Here's where it gets tricky: a complete AR rifle including the lower is considered to be a rifle, and is therefore legally mailable by a non-FFL; however, if a lower is not (a) part of an assembled rifle or (b) accompanied by ALL the necessary parts to build said rifle, it is NOT legally mailable by a non-FFL. In short, if you mail an AR rifle, THE ENTIRE RIFLE should go in one box!
  • It is not legal to mail ammunition via USPS. There is no FFL exception as with handguns, NFA firearms, and AR lowers. IOW you should NOT include any ammo in the package.

had no idea you could ship rifles at post office did not know you could cash a postal money order at post office or a wally mo at wally world. I was worried about bad mo coming back from bank after a week or so.

One other thing...

Be aware that not all FFL's accept firearm shipments from non-FFL's. Federal law allows them to accept such shipments but does not require them to do so.

Some FFL's routinely reject such shipments because of potential legal hassles if the sender cannot be readily identified for record-keeping purposes, and/or the firearm turns out to be stolen or illegally modified.

Bottom line: check with the destination FFL BEFORE you send the gun.

I learned my lesson on that one. I charged a guy $12 to mail a handgun frame, and had it come back RTS. Ended up costing me $45 to ship it overnight, because he was on the other side of the country in the middle of nowhere.
