there is a Colt Commander calling my name at my favorite shop. I can get it for 570 out the door. Nice bluing, attractive wood grips, seems pretty well put together on the whole. My track record with Colt 1911s is not great however. Circa mid-90s, I owned at one time or another an Officers, a LW Commander, and a Gold Cup and they were all POSes.

Has Colt truly come around?

I doubt I will get many voices telling me not to buy it as 99% of you people are really bad influences. ;)

A friend bought a Colt 1991 A1 last year which I have shot a lot at the range. It really isn't that accurate though, and twice I've had feed problems with it, but both times it was with an 8 round mag, not the stock mag. So I guess it was the spring in the magazine which caused the feed problems.

It does seem like it's built well, it's just not out of the box competition accurate by any stretch though.

I have been happy with both a .45 1991A1 Combat Commander and a customized 9mm Combat Commander. The .45 seems more accurate, but both guns feed well with a variety of ammo.
I just had the 9mm Commander out yesterday and shot some Olympic FMJs through it. It seemed to like them better than an Argentinian HP that I also tried them in. Commanders seem to go for less around here, but I might be talked into spending that much, if I didn't have a couple already around.

And A Beer,

like you I have owned Colt Gold Cup's, Gov't Model's,
Commander's (LW and all steel) and I have never
had a problem with any of them. As a matter of fact,
I wish I had the two Gold Cup's and the LW Commander
back. The Gold Cup's were 70 series, and the LWC was
even before that?

So, yes I think I will advise you to go ahead and make
that purchase; and I don't believe you will be sorry.

Best Wishes,

I have read enough posts about Colt to believe where there is smoke, there is fire, but the ones I have owned have been superb. I have owned a National Match, a series 70 Government, a series 80 Government, and an Officers Model (series 80) and never had a lick of trouble from any of them. My Series 80 Government is super accurate, they definitely put their best into it. I shot my two Government models bone stock in IPSC for about a year along with heavy weekly practice sessions. I did replace recoil springs, extractors, and ejectors here and there (routine maintainance) but no mods. I even shot my Series 80 in an IPSC match after leaving the store where I bought it. I never even cleaned it, and never had a problem with it. I have been unlucky with some good quality guns, but Colt isn't one of them.

I bought a stainless 1991a1 last year. My 1st Colt. It has been a fine performer. I've recommended 2 shooting buddies to buy Colts as well and they are equally happy w/ their purchases as well.

so i bought it, cleaned it, oiled it, and put 200 (100 SWC/100 ball) rounds through it

nice balance, nice trigger, accurate, 1 malfunction that was most likely operator induced (riding the slide)

i was literally a bloody mess when i finished though, the web of my hand was oozing the red stuff in three places, it was even more painful than my mil-spec SA, despite this it is a very fun gun to shoot, just need a topical pain killer

ill have to dig up a shooting glove until my hand callouses up, i will not put a beavertail on this thing because i like the way it looks box stock, may spring for some stag grips though
