Wrist pain problem shooting

When I have a flare up of tendinitis on the top of my wrist shooting handguns, will athletic wrap or tape around the wrist help prevent pain during recoil?

I have a similar problem but it's not my wrist, it's my forearm and it is painfull to hold by .357s level for firing. I think I am just going to replace my Blackhawk and Model 27 for a Single-Six and a Smith Snubby in .32 Mag.

Have someone stomp on your big toe to take your attention away from your wrist.
Seriously, there's a right way to wrap a wrist and lots of wrong ways.
Have someone who knows how show you.
The store bought bands that seem to work best for shooting, go around the palm of the hand, too, with the thumb sticking out.

Pain

New to this forum, new to handguns, not new to shooting, but I am having some pain shooting my new Ruger LCR 38SPECIAL. Bought this for CC as I am an old lady who does not run so fast anymore. I have been trying to practice at the range with this but by the time I fire 15 rounds my hand is killing me. Base of the thumb and 1st joint. Trigger finger is numb since I got it, lol, but that is minor compared to the thumb. It wouldn't stop me in an emergency, but I feel the need to shoot a lot at the range before I will be comfortable carrying . Tried changing how I grip to give more support with my left hand, helped some, but not enough. Any suggestions? Glad to see I am not the only one with these problems OldJARHEAD! Maybe it's the OLD part in both our names?

I had wrist pain flare ups for a car accident years ago. I found a neoprene type wrist brace. it looped around the thumb and had a velcro closure for the wrist. I wore it every chance i could awake or asleep for over a year.
It took 90% of the flare ups away.

I would suggest getting one of those wrist braces made for carpal tunnel. It's at least worth a try. Also, perhaps an anti inflammatory prescribed by your doctor taken a couple hours before shooting might help. I recently had a flare up in my right hand and that combo worked very well for me.

Are you sure that it's not arthritis rather than tendinitis? I had pain on the side and top of my wrist. I went to the hand doctor who gave me a cortisone shot for the side pain. He took xrays of my wrist and said I had arthritis in both wrists, but the left was the worst. The only treatment is to fuse the bones which will limit motion.

I do place a wrap on it when I know I have to shoot support hand only in a match and it seems to help. Iceing it when it hurts helps a lot.

If it really is tendinitis, then ask your doc for a cortisone shot. It doesn't always work, but when it does, it only takes a few days and the pain is all gone. I've had five shots and it worked three times perfectly and one time not so much. It will not work for joints if you have no cartilage left. It works well for tendinitis.

I, too, have wrist and hand pain. it was worst when I first woke up. I discovered that when I sleep, my hands would end up in all kinds of contortions. If you wake up in the middle of the night, try to see how your hands are situated.

To fix this, I've slept with a hand brace on both hands... the ones they sell at Walgreens for Carpal Tunnel. Since I've worn them at night, my pain has subsided about 90%. When I shoot now, there is very little pain. It's worth a shot.
