Would you shoot this pistol?

I've got a Walther P5 Compact Special Forces ordered from Earl's. Its a very limited edition of an production over-run for the British Special Forces. Its got a special phosphate type finish and military markings on the slide. I inquired as to how many of these pistols are in the U.S. and the reply I received was, maybe 50.

It will be Sept at the earliest before I am able to obtain a standard P5 Compact...

So, would you shoot this pistol if it was yours?

Depends on why you bought it. If it is meant to be an investment then no. If it were me then of course I would. I don't buy guns as an investment. That's what mutual funds are for. They are tools. You could hold it knowing that it will have more value in 100 years if you don't use it. Unfortunatly you won't be here in 100 years to enjoy it.

Hmmm, what do you think those British Special Forces are doing with theirs? Since it's your only gun right now...I would.

As Kilgor said it depends on why you bought it. If it were me and I had any other gun that fill that "slot" I wouldn't. But then I have more than a few guns that have never been shot.

CMOS, you got me into this mess :D

I really did not buy this as an investment and I have an ample selection of handguns to fill this role.

My initial feelings were to go ahead and shoot it... then when I found out there were just 50, well it has given me 2nd thoughts.

'course I did pick up my as new std P5 y'day :)

Well, it's probably been fired at least once.

Saw Tales of the Gun the other night. Guy shot an old cap and ball he said was worth, I believe, $150,000.

So yea, I'd shoot it.

No, Don't shoot it!

I had one also (resold it).

Look as the blue book values of some military models/limited production versions, They are worth way more then the standatd version USED!! think what it will be worth unfired!!!, but it will take some time before it will have a great impact on its value.

BTW, I sold mine so as to reinvest the $$ in the (stock) market.

I personally would not shoot that particular P5 if it had collector value and if I wanted to preserve my investment. Certainly most guns are to shoot. But IMHO it's also okay to have guns just to admire. I'd admire that one.

Anyway, it's not long till the standard P5 becomes available in September.

My $0.02.

If you have another P5 and another compact on the way, I wouldn't shoot it. Only 50 made I would keep as new in the box. I bought a James Bond P99 from Earls only 2000
made and the gun is marked as such and 007xxx
seriel number. To me that will never be fired and stays in the box untouched. On the other hand I bought a P5 at the same time, Beautiful piece but that one I bought to shoot. I also bought the Cougar cat pack that is staying in the safe with the P99, I have an 8040 that I shoot and carry.
I hope this helps :) but I think you have been swayed otherwise  Your gun, your choice ;)

Anyway Happy Shooting :)

loknload,

I have one also James Bond Version (but in .40 Cal, only ten made in that caliber).

Fortunatly (not for my bank account), I live an hour away from Earls.

Some Guns are made for collecting some are for shooting! When I bought my James Bond Version, I loved it, so i went back and bought a standard P99 (QPQ) in 9mm for a shooter (love it!), that way there was no temptation! Just another dent in my bank account!

Now I need another PPK/s to shoot, as the West German one I have is 95%+ And i do want to carry it!

bk40,

If you stick that gun away in your safe you will be happy knowing that you have it.

If you take it down to the range, you can show it off, shoot it, bitch about it, handle it, and generally use it for what it was intended.

No contest for me--I'm shooting a one-of-five-hundred Colt Compensated Commander when I go to the range, and it rocks.

Whatever you decide, have fun.

Be safe,

Shoot it!!!!

I bought a 10th anniversary Beretta 92FS engraved with gold on the slide with the seals for US Army, US Air Force, US Marines & US Navy. It's got a gold plated hammer, screws and came with nice wood grips. The only thing that I've changed was to replace the wood grips with Hogues. And I've put nearly 4,000 rounds through it and carried it all over the U.S.

Personally I don't buy them to look at or hold. When they are finally worth something I'll be dead and gone. Why get something for my kids to enjoy later on? :D

Whatever you do, enjoy the gun.

Shoot and carry are 2 VASTY different things.

Keep it in the box, take the box to the range, shoot it... enjoy it. Clean it. Box it up again, take it home.

Carry means lock and load, holster, holster wear, battering, scraping, banging, scuffing, scratching, maybe even dropping... Then shooting, and then more holster carry.

I got a matched pair of custom .45s that while are PRICELESS... are shooters as I described above. They will NEVER feel the inside of a holster. After going to the range, they get boxed up again and are taken back to the safe deposit box.
