Would you recommend the XD(m) to someone that dislikes the XD?

The Springfield XD is a gun that I have always wanted to like but it is one of the few that I just do not like the feel of. The XD(m), on the other hand, I have never tried out. That is all about to change since I just won a brand new XD(m) 40 compact at what I consider a great price on gunbroker. My two big gripes about the XD were that the trigger felt awful (mine felt like it had two breaking points) and it always seemed like the XD had worse perceived recoil than other similar guns. To those that have experience with both, is there a significant upgrade going from the XD to the XD(m) or am I likely to dislike this gun as well?

If I pull the trigger very slowly on either of my XD-s, I perceive 4 different points. (Trigger safety, slack, striker block, sear.). When I "just shoot it", I perceive the trigger as one crisp click. I wonder if you're experience is something similar.

it'll probably treat you much better. I have quite a bit of trigger time with a lot of the different xd offerings. I've owned 3 XDMs, an XD, and an XD-s, and I've rented another XD-s, and several other XDs, as well as shot XDMs belonging to family members. I never did like the XD I picked up in trade and the triggers are quite a bit squishy, the XDM triggers are a little better but the major difference is the texturing of the trigger itself. as for ergonomics, there isn't a whole lot of difference, but again texturing is a lot different with the XDMs. the other major improvements are the ammo capacity increase. I personally love the XDM and don't think I'll ever have reason to sell the XDM45 compact I still have in my collection and ever since I bought it, the XD-s 9 4" I own has been my favorite concealed carry piece.

for someone that never cared for them, I doubt if you'll really warm up to it that much. if you do decide you like it, great, that's one less person drinking the glock koolaid. if not, send me a PM, I might just be interested in buying it:D

as for the crispness of the XD-S trigger, the trigger on my XD-s is far crisper than any XD I've ever handled, but at the expense of a far heavier trigger pull.

That could be what I noticed on mine. It also only happened when shooting slowly. Essentially the trigger would have some takeup, then hit a wall, then break, then hit another wall, then fire after breaking that wall. The first wall didn't require as much pressure as the second, but it was nonetheless noticeable. If I didn't have it in my head that the gun had what was essentially a false trigger break it would interrupt my shooting by making me think there might be a malfunction for a moment before remembering that the trigger had just tricked me. When shooting quickly it was not noticeable. For all I know there could have just been something wrong with the XD that I owned. I have never noticed this on one of my friends' XD, but that could also be the fact that his is well used and mine was brand new. Even if the XD(m) happens to be like that it won't be a big deal. I'll have $425 in it out the door. I wouldn't be surprised if I can make a little money selling it used if need be.

Thanks for all of the information! This makes me a little more confident in the purchase. The different texturing of the trigger may actually fix part of the perceived recoil issue I had with my original XD. It seems like an odd thing to complain about, but the sharp jerk of 40 S&W along with the shape of the trigger safety always left the tip of my trigger finger aching if I put more than 50 or so rounds through the gun in one session.

yes, that feeling is much less pronounced with the XDM. as for the two disinct breaks and takeups, I think you may have purchased an out of spec XD. I've never run into that problem, although I have noticed the different "phases" of the trigger pull like Lee describes, I think you'll be way happier with the XDM.

I have a XDM in 9mm . I also have a VP9 and a PPQ.
I wasn't happy with the XDM trigger compared to my other 2 handguns and bought a PRP trigger kit.
Pefect solution for me.

I have rented an XD(M) .40 Compact two or three times. Recoil is very good, should not be a problem. I admit being recoil-sensitive, more honest than others about it, and the XD(m) .40 Compact should be no problem for you even with defense loads, which I have tested in it also. I would give it a shot.

Good size for carry, I still think of getting one as a hiking gun. Should have gotten the .40 instead of the XD(m) .45 compact I DID buy, and later sell (too fat).

I like the regular XD series as well. The XD(m) series is a bit bigger in the grip as I remember.

I have gotten to the point that I do not recommend any gun to anyone...unless they specifically ask me to recommend one. But, as far as just suggesting a gun to someone...I don't bother...cause I don't care what they buy and I prefer to let them figure out what they want.

I like what I like and I suspect that most folks are the same.

In my experience shooting both, I haven't noticed any significant difference between the trigger feel of the XD or XD(M). Both are better than Glock triggers IMHO.

To me both seem to be relatively soft-shooting. A full-size (4.5" barrel) 9mm XD(M) can really soak up recoil. The high-bore axis is a non-issue to me. I can't speak to a .40SW compact, though.

Personally, though, I don't own any XDs as I don't care for the grip safety and already have plenty of Glocks and Walthers.

We had several service size XD's in the family 2002-2004; two forties and a nine. Try as I might, I could never really warm up to the trigger or get them to shoot particularly well.

I watched the progression of new XD offerings develop and was sorta 'meh' about them. Then my oldest son got a 45 XDs and that one was a different story... good trigger and inside the 9 ring of a B27 at 50 yards with any decent 230 grain factory load or handload. Now that one I could like.

The Missus and I have since moved on to M&P40 Compacts. They shoot as well or better than the XDs, they are very soft-shooting and they conceal real well. We really like them and at this point, I see no reason to change.

I dumped my old XD due to not liking the trigger (yes, I prefer Glock) and the higher perceived recoil (IMO, YMMV).

Tried an XD(m) with a though on picking up a compact and found that neither of these two problems were any better for me.

Take that for what its worth, as always YMMV.
