Would you recommend a lesson for 1st time out?

I have been shooting handguns for years, but have been interested in
adding a 12ga shotgun to my collection.

I am an adult of average size and height, but I can't help but think
of the tales of high recoil.

If I want to start in a safe fashion, would you recommend a lesson the 1st time out, or would a chat with the guys at the gun shop, reading the manual and some browsing of this forum prove adequate?
 
I myself would not pay for a lesson to learn shotgun basics. Drive to the local range and talk to the guys shooting. Most folks would have no problems taking a few seconds to show you the ropes. You already know the basic safety concerns dealing with firearms....same as a pistol.

Look for a trap, skeet or sporting clays range...and talk to a few guys in the parking lot. I know I'd be glad to help if you were in Southern Pa.

Get a lesson or two. The bennies are tremendous. So are using light loads for the first 1000 rounds or so. If you can find 7/8 oz 12 gauge loads, use them.

I do live versions of Shotgun 101 periodically. How close are you to MD?

In Florida you should have no problem finding a Trap/Skeet range and a decent instructor. Check out a book called "Blacks Wing and Clay" in the local library.

You definitely should take lessons, as in any sport having a Pro explain the Rules and basics is the proper way to begin enjoying the sport. They should cover safety, etiquitte, gunfit and stance and will be able to diagnose problems.

Unlike some of the other shooting sports, shotguning instruction is quite reasonable. I would start out shooting Skeet, it is the best introduction to shotgunning.
