Would you give this gift to your boss?

I am a telecom tech in Ohio and have about 15 other co-workers in the Ohio/IN/KY area. Our manager is an avid hunter and is also pretty pro 2A. He has mentioned that "someday" he would like to get his Concealed Handgun License, but just doesn't get around to it. Soooo, I thought I'd ask the other guys to chip in and we're getting him a certificate for a CCW course not too far from his home.

Pretty cool gift, eh? Hopefully that will be the nudge he needs to actually get his CCW license. Have you ever thought about giving this as a gift? Would you worry that it might back-fire?

Consider the possibility that he may have a wife who "tolerates" a shotgun or rifle in the house but would absolutely freak if he started to carry, assuming he even owns a handgun now. You might consider something with less potential for controversy.
FWIW
YMMV

That's definitely a valid point (and one that I considered). I know his wife fairly well and she is pretty tolerant of what he does as he is a really good dad and hubby. Still, there is that risk that CCWing may be "over the line" in her view, it's just hard to say with a lot of people. Gift is bought, however, so I guess it's just wait and see at this point. I suppose worse case is that he could still get the CHL and just not carry when he is with her or even not at all if she objects that strongly.

I waffled on getting it for a bit, but decided since he had mentioned he wanted to "someday" it was pretty safe to get the gift certificate. I suppose he could always "re-gift" it as he has plenty of hunting buddies.

Thanks for the input though, definitely food for thought for anyone considering doing the same thing.

A CCW training course would be a good thing for all gun owners to go to, regardless of your intent to carry or not (provided that it's a quality course with competent instructors).

I say do it, it's not mandatory to get your CCL after taking the class... So at the bare minimum, he'll have a good safety course under his belt.

I teach concealed carry as a hobby and a couple of months ago I certified my boss at no charge.
Funny, last week I got promoted....;)

I think it is an excellent gift. A lot of people would like to carry, but just can't get started. Especially in states that require a course.

Here, I OC'd (no license required, I believe KY is the same) for many years. Just never went to the effort to go to the Sheriff's office to apply for my CPL. I finally got tired of the wait when I wanted to purchase a new handgun and got my CPL. I still do not CC very much. Only in the winter when my coat covers, or partly covers my carry. It is a nice option. (and we do not even need a class to get our CPL)

Good woork there dcludwig.

I can't imagine my boss not having a CCW to begin with.

He's former special forces. Go to the range with him and he starts by running some sprints.... Something about elevated heart rate simulating fear and target shooting with a resting heart rate being a waste of time.

He takes his guns seriously. :)

I wouldn't chip in a few bucks: I'd volunteer to teach the class, (in Colorado, that is; I have no idea what's required in Ohio.)

ummm, I guess thats all well in good in CO, but none of us possess the needed qualifications to teach an approved CCW course in Ohio, which is why we are chipping in. Uh, can just anyone teach a course and then type out some form of certificate to get a CCW in Colorado? One would think SOME guidelines would be in place, I think thats a good thing. I don't care much for too many government regulations, but I think CCWing is not something to be considered iightly.

Seems like it won't backfire but realize a class is about $45 where i live and all the paperwork and passport photos and sheriff signoff and finger printing and and and...

That's the part that sucks. I am in the same boat as your boss. I already took the course, have my certificate and just haven't gotten around to going through all the extra garbage and expense to get it. I'm looking at another $120 and 3 months of waiting after that.

There are lots of other "certificates" that his wife might not be enthusiastic about: skydiving lessons; flying lessons, bullriding lessons . . . But if he is interested in the subject, the thought behind the gift will probably be appreciated, even if he never redeems the certificate or even if he takes the class but then never follows through with getting his Ohio CHL.

Hello ripnbst,,,

I'm looking at another $120 and 3 months of waiting after that.

Go ahead and put in your paperwork my friend,,,
My CWL came back to the Payne County Sheriff's office in 31 days flat.

OSBI is moving the applications through very quickly now.
