Worth waiting in line at Cabelas?

Tomorrow, dec. 14, Cabelas is having one of their '5hr doorbuster sales.' Normally, I'm not a big fan of Cabelas but I wanted to go pickup some ammo, NormaUSA TAC 308, at 42.99 for 50, it's worth it just for the brass!

Cabelas is also giving away door prizes to the first 250 people. So, since I know I will need to get in line early (to get ammo), I will be one of the first 250: Is it worth getting there super early for a spot in or near the front of the line? (Which I will try to anyway-for ammo). Or will it not make any difference as far as the giveaways are concerned? Has anyone here actually gone to one of these things before?

BTW, the prizes are a rifle, rod reel combo, tent/sleeping bag combo, Bow package, vacuum sealer and gift cards. Totaling $3,800 in prizes, which by my math means 1 of each big prize and a bunch of $10 gift cards. About a 5/250 chance?

Been there done that. Depends on the weather, how much I'm pretty sure I'd save / win, and how big the crowd would likely be a few hrs before.
I'm getting too old to want to stand in line for very long.

The local Cabela's is usually dead as dried fish on Tuesday mornings .... right after their ammo shipment comes in ..... :D

when I went by Cabela's in Kearney this morning around 7:30 it was 14 degrees and close to 350 people standing in line to get in door at 8:00

Okay, Jen and I got to cabelas around 4:45, my buddy and his GF got there right behind us. We were maybe 30 back from the front of the line. I got a $20 gift card, Jen- $10GC, my buddy-$5GC, his GF won the vacuum sealer.

After applying the GCs my GF and I had received and after tax; I walked away with 100 rounds of NormaUSA TAC-308 for $62.62!!!!!:D

I'm glad it was worth it to you, and you're happy with your purchase.

Me?... I was asleep on the couch ;) (best spot in the house when my back is having fits).

I did this at the Cabela's in Hoffman Estates, IL Black Friday sale.

First 600 people in line get at least a $15 off card. I got up at 3am, left my house in Chicago about 3:30 and as I was arriving around 4:15 was dismayed to see the parking lot packed... I parked and got in line, it was filling up quickly behind me. Surely I was one of the first 600 I thought... wrong! After doors opened at 5am and waiting 45 minutes in 15 degree temps I got to the part of the line where they were handing out the cards just in time to see them give the last one away, I was probably about #625. :(

Oh well I thought, still have some good deals there. Got some things I wanted (including a oak box with 300 rounds of Winchester .22LR for $17, I'm a sucker for wooden ammo boxes), and glanced at the checkout line. Not too bad, I figured I'd at least sign up for the credit card and save $25 that way. 10 minutes later when the card was ready I couldn't even see the end of the line, I followed it as it snaked through the store until I finally found the end. Took 45 minutes to check out, got out the door and it was still dark outside. Drove home grabbing some breakfast from McDonad's on the way and went back to bed.

I think that was my first and last Black Friday experience lol. Could have just stayed home and ordered online.

I did just that, much to the dismay of my sisters-in-law, a few years ago.
They left in the bitter cold at about 12:30 am to get some "screaming deals" for Black Friday. Meanwhile, I was heading to bed, having gotten some of the same deals, and a few better deals, while drinking an adult beverage in the comfort of my computer chair.

Heck no!

I highly doubt Cabelas will be selling anything I want that I can't find on the internet for the same price or less. How much are you really going to save? $20?

I would be glad to see this entire door buster Black Friday stupidity pass. I know the retailers want to build excitement and offer a few items at cost to get you in the door, hoping you spend on the rest of the marked up items in the store. But with the internet and the ability to check price across a wide range of stores, I am not seeing the effort of standing in the cold for a few "deals' to be worthwhile anymore.

Using limited quantities of .22LR as a come on in the current ammo climate is pretty sad, take note Bass Pro and Cabelas.

With the bad weather on the past weekends out east keeping people out of the malls I expect to see a lot of sales on clothes, boots, and jewelry popping up this weekend, and right after Christmas. Deals that probably will make you regret shopping Black Friday for those items.
