Hi all,

I have an opportunity to trade a LNIB PPQ (unfired since the factory) for a linke new Marlin 1895 LTD with a 24" octagonal barrel in 45-70. Worth doing?

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks for the feedback. I have never owned a levergun before..could someone give me some pointers on what to be on the lookout for?

Check for rust, especially in the barrel, and look for muzzle wear. Generally, rifles should be cleaned from breech to muzzle, but it's difficult to do this with a lever gun because it's difficult to remove the bolt, so many people clean lever guns from the muzzle to the breech. If the person doing the cleaning uses a crappy cleaning rod and/or fails to use a bore guide, this can damage the muzzle, which can make the gun less accurate. A good gunsmith can fix this by redoing the crown, but it's not exactly cheap.

Beyond that, I'm not really familiar with Marlin rifles, so hopefully someone who is can give a few more pointers.

Which are you trading away?

If you are trading away the PPQ and you have other pistols in the same caliber, I'd say yes. If you will no longer have a 9mm, I might think twice.

Other than that if you are trading something you don't need for something yo want, follow your heart.

FWIW, Marlin leverguns are a snap to clean from the breech - open the lever halfway, remove the lever pivot screw, then withdraw the lever "down" and the bolt "back & out", taking care not to lose the ejector & v-spring, residing inside the LH receiver sidewall (it can be re-installed only one way).

That LTD II or IV (there were 5 different LTD configs) is about the finest Marlin .45-70 one can get their paws on - VERY desireable to levergun folks.

Here's a pic of all 5 versions (not mine, BTW), from the LTD-I at the top, down to the LTD-V at the bottom.

LTD I – straight grip, 24” half round bbl.
LTD II – checkered, pistol grip, 24” octagon bbl.
LTD III – straight grip, 18.5” octagon bbl.
LTD IV – straight grip, 24" octagon bbl.
LTD V – checkered, pistol grip, 24” half round bbl
