Worst Shooting Injury?

Another thread here got me to thinking about injuries, particularly shooting-related ones. What is the worst that's ever happened to you? I've heard of people developing blisters in the second day of week-long shooting classes, sprains, cuts, falls, etc during matches, and of course, unintentional shootings. So what's your story?

The worst I recall is being hit in the leg with a jacket fragment while attending a "steel challenge" type match. I was standing, and felt a sharp, painful impact on my left thigh. I didn't think anything had penetrated, I'd just caught a bounceback, and then someone said to me, "Hey, better check yourself, man, you're bleeding." I dropped my jeans right then and there, and sure enough, there was a small penetration wound. It wasn't painful after the first minute, though, and stopped bleeding, so I finished out the match. It's still in my leg.
As a funny aside, I got a few snickers when I dropped my pants. That was the one day I decided to wear boxer shorts instead of my usual briefs, and the pair I was wearing were pink with white polka dots. :o

Non-shooting related, the worst injury I ever recieved was nearly electrocuting myself when I was seven. I tried to unplug a lamp from a plugged in extension cord by gripping the plug with my teeth.
Have you ever seen how cartoon characters get those little spinning black-and-white circles in their eyes when they get electrocuted? Whoever first drew that must have had the experience, 'cause I've been there, done that, got the T-shirt, and that IS what you see when you've got 120V AC running through your delicate little bod. All you hear is a loud "buzzz," and you CAN think. I remember thinking that I was going to die, and how scared I was. No pain, though. That came later, from the burn in the corner of my lip. Liquid diet for a week.

Maybe that explains how I got this way? ;)

I have definitely had the giant finger blisters during a multi-day class. I have also had hot brass fall into my shirt and roll around my belly until finally lodging in the waistband area and blistering. Probably the rudest injury I had was while shooting steel and a splatter fragment came back and struck me in the cheek with a goodly amount of force, enough to hurt and bruise, but only scratch the skin.

Speaking of being hit, at the range where I shoot, a guy has a life membership. He was on the back range with a class when he felt a sharp pop to the buttocks. He didn't think much of it since no one was behind him, but then noted the wet feeling. He was bleeding. A quick check revealed a bullet wound. It seems the bullet had taken an unlikely course through a drain pipe between range, coming out down range and striking this fellow in the wallet, then buttock. She showed us his wallet. All of his credit cards and license had a nice hole in them. Being a good guy, he let the range cover his medical expenses and he was satisfied that the incident was an accident and did not sue the range. Too many people sue of stuff like this. He was thrilled with his life membership and with no real harm, no foul.

I've never injured myself shooting, unless you count one moment of stupidity where I fired my shotgun without hearing protection, and had my ears ring for a week.

But in college I was fond of knife throwing, and on one occasion when I was new to it, the knife spun wrong, bounced off the target, and ended up imbedded in my shin bone. Had to pull it loose. MAN did that hurt!

I have been hurt worse installing a car stereo than I've ever been while shooting. Most painful shooting related problem was a sore thumb from cocking a Ruger Blackhawk all day.

Nothing else I have been though compares to the day a speeding clown in an Olds Cutlass ran me and my Yamaha into the guard rail. MAJOR ouch, followed by spleen removal and months of therapy for the broken wrist.

When I was in the service, some moron at the range did not clear his M16 properly, and the round left in the chamber wound up kneecapping another GI. Really bad scene. The guy who had the AD got dropped from Spec 4 to PFC and had major fines and disciplines, but the guy he shot got steel rods and pins in his leg and a medical discharge.

When I was a kid, I walked into the kitchen one day, and slipped and put my right hand dead center in the middle of an electric stove burner element... Had blisters like nice concentric circles. Can't tell today that anything was wrong...

Caught a fragment in the ass (don't ask - wasn't there, can't tell you about it), and then ended up running about five miles to get away from the gentlemen who had gifted me with it... Sucker still hurts sometimes, but it's pretty small, and the quack said that it'd be like looking for a needle in a haystack, and the removal would cause more damage...

Hot brass down my shirt from my P228. It settled in the small of my back...stung for acouple of days. Thank God that's all I can offer!

I shot myself....with a staple gun. Was holding the backer to keep it from moving. I felt pretty stupid but kept shooting anyway.

Empty case out of a FN-D in .308 right betwix the eyes - case mouth first. The scar looks like a :).

Worst I've had was a sore shoulder from shooting a couple of rounds of trap while wearing a T-shirt. (It was early in the season, before my shoulder "toughened up.") Bruises looked a LOT worse than they felt.

Worst accidental injury I ever saw was a neat case of "Weatherby Eyebrow."

Worst I ever inflicted on someone else was on my PH in Zimbabwe. We were cropping some impala at night with a spotlight at the behest of the game department, and hence, shooting from the vehicle was allowed. As I worked the bolt, a spent .30/06 case flew to my right and went down the PH's collar. Did he ever yell!

Don't know how much .223 brass, 9mm and some other stuff that looked
like casings.

Though, my worst shooting 'accident' was most certainly caused by my
own dumbness, when I tried to use beadsighting a pistol-gripped
shotgun. Of course, one shouldn't shoot 3" shells then! :)

Supposedly, I learned the lesson and my hunting rifle has a normal
synthetic stock. D:

Griz, you ain't alone. I did it and know of others who did also. Them things sting for days afterward! Thank God that's the worst.

In a singularly stupid moment, I positioned myself adjacent to a clay pidgeon thrower to try and unstick the arm. Long story short, the throwing arm came prematurely unstuck (or released late, depending upon one's perspective) and hit me in the shin at full force about 1/2 way through it's arc. Having broken multi finger/toe bones and tearing joints in various sports and in one ill-fated boxing match, getting hit by a car, impaling myself with a broken drill bit, learning a painful lesson about shooting bowling balls with a pellet gun, and falling off a dump truck (don't ask), that one by far hurt the most.

Steel Match about 2 years ago. Caught a fragment from a plate in the upper arm. Though it was just a scratch, but about 6 minutes later had to go to a doctor to have it cut out. When he asked what I thought it was and I told him I knew exactly what it was, he laughed and said he was going to put "remove foreign object" on the insurance form so no questions would be asked. Good guy. He's a shooter too!

I took a friend from work shooting. We put many rounds through my SKS and a 30-30, and then I switched to my Contender with a 10" .44 mag barrel(no scope). I fired a few rounds(it's a single shot) and then let my friend try. In the meantime, the state police pulled up to the range to let us know over their car's loudspeaker that a tornado was on the way and that we needed to get to safety, quickly,

While I was hurriedly putting my guns away, my co-worker fired the Contender. He held it as limp as he did when firing the rifles. Blood trickled down from the gash between his eyebrows after the gun slammed into his forehead. The range officer gave him some quick first aid, and we got to safety away from the tornado. He had a headache and later a small scar, but he was okay.

Upon cleaning the gun, I found a little skin and some eyebrow hair stuck to the metal rear sight. Ouch.

I should have made sure that he held the gun firmly, but I 'assumed' that he knew what he was doing since he'd fired my rifles on separate occasions and he'd watched me fire my handguns.

We're lucky that he didn't lose an eye. The main lesson that I learned that day is to never make assumptions when dealing with firearms and other shooters. I now know better. I've also decided that I won't ever rush an outing at the range. By hurrying, safety can be compromised.

I won't allow this to ever happen again. If you take someone shooting, please don't let it happen, either.

When I was about 10 years old I got shot in the ass with a BB gun, while climbing a mountain here in central Alabama!!!

I was out shooting .38 wadcutters through my SP101, just kind of plinking around. I only had four wadcutters for my last cylinder, so to make a full load, I dropped in a .357 180 grain Black Talon.

And forgot about it. But not for long -- tak, tak, tak, tak, WHOMP -- worst case of hammerbite you ever did see.

Slipped on the ice at an outdoor range in my hometown and REALLY racked myself up. I hurt for weeks.

The worst I've ever seen:

1. Guy shooting a right-hand Steyr AUG hands it to a left handed shooter. The ejected case ripped a huge hole in the guy's cheek and broke a number of his teeth.

2. A newbie shooting at the range with this friend. They were shooting rifles, then pulled out a .44 Mag. revolver.

The newbie I guess reflexed, and rested the barrel in his off hand with it loosely wrapped around the cylinder just before touching off a shot. The guy he was with couldn't stop him in time.

The newbie's hand looked like it had been flayed open with a scalpel in a bunch of places. Rather ugly.
