HARRISBURG, Pa., July 22 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Audubon Pennsylvania
is hosting a two-part workshop on white-tailed deer management at
four locations across the state of Pennsylvania during August and
September 2002. It will address methods for monitoring deer
impacts and managing deer at the local level.

Overabundant deer have seriously damaged the state's forests,
farmlands, and suburbs. Management techniques that recognize
environmental needs as well as concerns of landowners have become
increasingly necessary. One objective of the workshops will be to
discuss the new hunting policies recently adopted by the
Pennsylvania Game Commission and those that are evolving to meet
local ecological needs.

Entitled "The Ecological Impact of White-tailed Deer," this
educational workshop is designed for park and nature center
naturalists, environmental educators, land managers and others who
manage property or educate the public on ecological issues.

Some of the topics to be covered include: public education and
outreach; tools for localized deer management, environmental
education regarding overabundant deer and methods for monitoring
deer impacts.

During the first day of the workshop, participants will receive
a forest health kit for use on their land to begin monitoring and
assessing deer impact.

The workshops will include speakers from Audubon Pennsylvania,
Natural Resource Consultants, Inc. and the Pennsylvania Game
Commission. The free workshops will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each
day. Limited space requires reservations. Lunch will be provided
each day.

August workshops will be held at Beechwood Farm Nature Reserve
in Fox Chapel, Peace Valley Nature Center in Doylestown, and at
Grey Towers National Historic Landmark in Milford. The second day
of the workshop, to be held in September, will be located at
Beechwood, Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in
Philadelphia and Grey Towers.

Statewide concern over mounting damage caused by overabundant
deer has been mounting. This workshop will offer an opportunity to
address and channel this potential public energy.

Pre-registration is required. Please contact Kathy Randall,
Conservation Program Coordinator, Audubon Pennsylvania, 225 Bognar
Road, Somerset, PA 15501, 814-445-5335. Information is also
