working up a load

I am working up a round ball hunting load for a Lyman Trade Rifle in .58 cal. My first trip to the range found me using 90 grains and doing well at 50 and 100 yds. One comment was that only 70 grains is needed for whitetail deer and it is much easier on the shoulder when tuning up the rifle at the range. Any comments? I was thinking of working up a load around 100 grains.

I use an 80 gr. charge of ff with a pathed ball in .54 cal wit great results
on whitetails.
I would just pick the most accurate charge and let that big old .58 cal
ball do its stuff.
