Texas Establishes Concealed Handgun License Reciprocity With Florida, Tennessee

Texas has signed reciprocal agreements with Florida and Tennessee, allowing citizens with concealed handgun licenses issued by Florida or Tennessee to legally carry concealed handguns in Texas, and vice versa.

Col. Thomas A. Davis Jr., director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, signed the reciprocity agreements with the State of Florida and the State of Tennessee through which their licensees can visit Texas with their concealed handguns.

"This agreement will allow licensed Texans to travel freely in the states of Tennessee and Florida, while enjoying the same or similar privileges their licenses give them at home," Davis said.

These reciprocity agreements--the fifth and sixth Texas has reached with another state--were made possible by 1997 changes to the state’s concealed handgun law. Texas also has reciprocity agreements with Arkansas, Louisiana, Arizona and Oklahoma.

"Texans should remember that weapons laws vary from state to state, and before traveling, license holders should educate themselves about laws in other states that govern where and when they can legally carry their concealed handguns," Davis said.

It's about time! I have relatives in Texas, and I have been wondering why two states whose pro-CCW governors are brothers could not agree on this quicker.

States should just unilaterally recognize other permits. Even if some cranky states don't go along it will end up with more reciprocity.

Good news to this Texan! I've been wanting to do some SCUBA diving in Florida. Now I can feel better about my family's safety if we do go.

You know, CCW is more then just protection. It's a strong political move by a state's legislators. Think about it. Every person who has CCW will ALWAYS vote to keep it during elections. Once you have CCW, it's a fron line issue at the ballot box.

CCW could be a litmus for the direction this country is heading. Will the number of CCW states increase or decrease?...

NRA? Good. Now join the GOA!

The NRA is our shield, the GOA will be our sword.

So CMOS, you must be using some sort of Navy Seals standard issue firearms if you are taking them diving. What is a good dive gun? Sorry, I couldn't resist. It is what came to mind after reading your post.

CMOS I have some 9mm surplus Navy Seal ammo, water proof. For real,no joke, you can buy it from Sportsman Guide.

Your gun may not do to well if you dive in salt water. :)I couldn`t resist eather. But the ammo is real.

CHL is the only loss in the gun banners' history.

I am concerned about retention of CHL holders. Many get it; but very few carry and I question how many would pay the fees to reapply. Also there's the whole "I don't need it, gone for a whole x years without having to use weapon".

However, as bad as having the right licenced, bureaucracies are hard to get rid of. This is usually a bad thing; but they would be loath to close down the licencing dept.

Battler.

My CHL is a lot like my seat belt now. As a teenager I never wore one, but in my early 20s I started and now feel naked without one on in a car. Same way with my gun. I feel vulnerable without the comforting bulk of my concealed weapon. BTW, I just took the renewal class this past week. $100 I think is still way too much ($70 renewal fee + $30 class), but it is worth it to me.
