With my own shotgun, 2nd time ever. Went out and bought a 'competitor' trap from dicks and took a case of clays and a box of ammo up to the local state park, along with a buddy.

Talk about a good time. We were using my new Maverick, and it was a blast. Considering we got 100 rounds for $15 and a case (90 count) of clays for $5, it's something I will probably end up doing quite frequently. Even my non gun enthusiast friend said next time I go he wants to get his own case or two of clays, and is looking into a shotgun.

Overall, I hit about 85% of my targets. Need some work, especially when going for two at a time, but was a good deal of fun. Plus the trap (which I got for $20 including a 20 round box of ammo... gift cards are great) worked flawlessly and only maybe 4 clays broke out of the trap. Considering I usually stick to rifles, it was a genuinely good time.

I know what you talking about, I got a thrower last summer from my uncles (they said it did not work but all that was wrong is they did not read the book that came with it "firmly plant feet in ground" )

Be careful, before you know it your spending all day at the range standing on top a pile of smoking hulls saying with a worn raspy voice "PULL"....... OK that does not happen, it's about the most fun you can have with 25.00...... Well that and gathering every left over piece of clay over the size of a dime and shooting it with a .22.
 
Wow, sounds just like my first time out!

A friend of mine and I went out with a some shells, clays and one of those plastic arm throwers......man those things go far, esspecially when your friend is on the baseball team. I used the same gun that you have, and I still have it today.

My first time was a couple years ago, and last summer my squad placed 1st in the state senior experienced division of the youth skeet shooting program (SCTP).

I used a mossberg 500a 18.5" barrel, but I learned on the Maverick! That gun will serve you well, and if you think just throwing clays is fun, then you DEFINITELY need to seek out a local skeet range and shoot it for real. It is a ton of fun, and it will be worth your while even if you just go once.
 
You know the first clay I broke was thrown with one of those plastic hand throwers.

I will also mention I broke the clay with my shotguns barrel to avoid a broken nose. The spring throwers that sit on the ground are much safer in my mind.
 
Yup more fun than a barrel of monkeys in my opinion. A buddy and I blew off an entire box of clays (135) and a whole bunch of ammo one day and have been doing it every chance we get since then. I havent had a chance to get my own shotgun out after clays because all i have is a plastic thrower and no-one close to shoot with to throw clays for me. I want one of the mechanical throwers too thats on my list of things to buy pretty soon.
 
I don't care for those spring throwers. They move around a lot on the ground if they're not absolutely staked hardcore, and resetting that awful spring is a nightmare.

I much prefer the hand throwers, and I'm quite proficient at it. Problem is, someone else has to do it when you shoot...usually.;)

If you want to shoot clays by yourself, check out the Trius One Step Trap. It cocks under zero spring tension, weighs enough to not jump all over, and you just step on a pedal to throw the clay. It throws a ton better than the "Competitor" (I bought that one first, and the red plastic thrower), but costs $100. I've never read a review from someone who didn't like it.
 
yea, the 'competitor' worked fine, and we had it staked it pretty well. My buddy has one with the zero spring tension and it was nice being able to just pull it straight down without worrying about the trigger not setting, and almost knockin your block off, hah.

I've never been good at wing shooting. I need more pratice!

First time i ever threw skeet was for my dad, and i was mabey 12 years old, and that spring thrower was working me to death. The trigger was a lil rusty, and the throwing arm hit me across the shin one time. I never new the true deffinition of pain until that day :eek:
 
I also tried several before settling on the one-step. It's a great thrower. I also mounted one of the red plastic throwers to an old golf club shaft. You can really sling 'um fast and long with it.

I try to shoot with a buddy or two and we will take turns throwing from different angles so they aren't all going away. Of course, you have to be careful and watch that you aren't shooting back toward the person throwing.

We also don't wait to hear "pull". The thrower's job is to catch the shooter off guard (like when they are reloading). This makes it more like a dove hunting and we usually shoot 'till the barrels are too hot to touch. :D
 
Yeah it throws the clays 40 feet or so, I can do better throwing them like Frisbees and I'm faster throwing them.
