Wood rifle stock finish, which to use?

Help. I recently bought a Remington 700 Varmint in .223. Nice gun, great trigger, beautiful stock.

I couldn't get squat to group in it like all my other .223 guns, so upon pulling the action from the stock.....lo and behold the barrel channel is rough, at best, and fully in contact with the barrel all the way down. Yuck and very out of character for a Remington based on my previous experience.

Out comes the 36 grit paper and a 7/8" dowel and an hour later, fully floated barrel!!

Now, what do I put on the raw wood laminate to match the factory satin finish that is both moisture and gun chemical proof and generally available without being @ the mercy of the BBT?

Thanks!

Tom

Get a spray can of Birchwood Casey "Tuf-Sheen" finish. It is a satin polyurethane. It will do a fine job of sealing your stock. Mask the existing finish before you spray.

depending on how long you want to spend on this project- old fashion says linseed oil and turpintine(I dont rember the formula, but I could find it) rub on, dry, steel wool, repeat until the wood will not take any more. another easier is Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil several light aplications then if you are going to be in nasty weather Turtle wax the barrel channel.

A good satin polyurathane will do the job.
Thin the first coat about 10% with thinner, so it will soak into the wood, and seal it. Then put on 2-3 coats full strength, in thin coats to finish. Let it age for 1 week, and apply a coat of Johnson's Paste Floor Wax.
