Wood on a Model 27

I got these grips in a trade.

They are factory N frame grips. The guy I got them from said they were on an 8 3/8 inch Model 27 he had. But he did not buy the gun new, so he wasn't sure if they came on it.

Can anyone tell me on what guns these were issued?

I really like them. I have large hands and I love the big target stocks.

Checkering? Who needs checkering? It would hide the grain of the wood. :)

Nice looking grips you guys although my taste runs towards the "traditional" checkered. Roger, what holster is that you have? I'm in need of a leather holster for my 6" 27.

The holster is a Smith and Wesson model 21 26.

They made some good leather some years back.

It's a honey. I picked it up on an Ebay for 20 bucks.

they look like factory N-frame goncala aves uncheckered target stocks. all the N-frames i've handled came with the checkered stocks except the commemerative issues. i remember the uncheckered pairs as being a factory option and available through dealers.

just wondering, does the grain on the bottom of your stocks match?

The grain matches.

Maybe it's me, but they feel just a tad "chunkier" than my checkered ones. I like the way they feel.

that is because all the wood that would have been removed during checkering is still there...depending on your wood craving skills, there's plenty to be wittled away

I have a 27-2, 5", patridge sight rig that came with those grips, and the grain matches.

Savin for if I sell the gun, too big for me.

The smooth target grips were optional on new guns and sold as replacement parts. I have seen them on both K and N frame guns. They look great but many people complained about the gun squirming around during recoil (including me which is why I sold the set I had years ago). These grips will bring big bucks at auction (saw a set go for about $80 on ebay).

I like big, checkered target stocks for target shooting.

Smooth grips work well for me also, and there is the added bonus of all that beautiful grain showing.

Never had any squirming happen before, and that was with a 44 magnum. But then, I have large paws, and others results my vary.

Although if your hands got wet, I bet it might become a factor.

Absolutely beautiful, is the best two word's I can use to
describe those grip's on your S&W model 27. I think I
would install Hogue's or Pachmayr's, and save 'em for
Sunday "Show and Tell" class'es.

I've seen factory stocks just like those on Smith & Wesson N frames made quite a few years ago. I like the look of them, but they don't fit my average- to slightly small-sized hand very well, so after years of making do with Pachmayr rubber grips, I treated myself to a set of Fung stocks. They're strictly for match shooting, mind, but they fit very well, and I've come to prefer stippling to checkering.

Absolutely, Purely, Totally, Subjective - - -

- - -But the large "Target Style" stocks on a short barrel revolver don't appeal to me-- To my eye, they make the handgun look "stern Heavy." I like the 3.5" M-27 rigged the way they originally came from Smith: "Magna" style stocks, which follow the grip frame. Classic appearence. While the vast majority are checked, the Magna style can also be had smooth. I add a Pachmayr or Tyler adaptor for shooting comfort, and, believe it or not, with proper holster and belt, the big ol' revo is pretty concealable!

Wilson's Miculek narrow speed stocks are a beautiful compromise--Great looking smooth wood, non-clunky, but easy to hand onto during double action fire. Elder son gave me a set for my .45C Mountain Gun for b'day a couple of years back and they improved the handling AND looks of the gun.

But- - - -To each his/her own!;)

Best,
Johnny

'ZACKLY like that, Frenchy - - -

Good lookin' Highway Patrolman. Just like the first service sidearm I carried in uniform about leventy-thor years ago. Wish I still had it.;)

Best,

Them thar little teeny grips just don't cut it if'n ya got big paws!!

With the Magnas I can almost wrap my fingers around twice!

How's that saying go?? ....."I like big butts....."
