Wood Grips on New S&W 586

586 grips

586 are L frames = k frames as far as grips are concerned. I think you can order off smith and Wesson website. The best quality classic grips, in my opinion, are made in Germany - goggle Nill Griffe Shop.

I currently use Ahrends Tactical Smooth grips on my 686 round butt. I like it a lot (in fact I use Ahrends Tactical Smooth for all my K/L frames).

But, today at a gun show, I handled a new 586 Classic and it had what seemed like an old "Coke bottle" style-like grips and they felt SUPERB! They were fitted perfectly with nice smooth, rounded edges.

I was a bit surprised because I heard that they might be made by Altamont, and I was not impressed by one set of Altamont K round conversion target I bought before (good fit and trim, but the upper back strap grip area is very flat and sharp, almost 90 degree angle, instead of being nicely rounded, and is very uncomfortable when gripped hard).

And for some odd reason, S&W seems to sell only square butt target grips for K and N frames and not the round butt grips.

Not too, that Altamont grips are not true "wood" grips but are stabilized wood. That is, wood that has been pressure treated with a plastic resin.

They will never feel like good oil finished hardwood grips. They will look good, but feel like plastic.

I am not sure whether that is the same set as what is now on the 586 Classic from S&W.

I think the ones that come on the 586 now is very slim at the top. The older ones are thicker.

I am 99% certain that any new Smith that is equipped with wooden grips from the factory are made by Altamont. You can even get S&W medallions on grips you buy from them....

While I've not handled one of the new 586's, I've handled several other S&W's from their "classic" series and even owned a couple (M21-4 and 40-1) and all of them have come with Altamont grips.

While the Altamonts certainly look nice, in my hand at least they leave a good deal to be desired. The best I've found for both classic looks and feel are Culina's. I've purchased two sets of Culina's: one of his standard Coke-profile targets for my M27-2 and a set of his magnum-profile targets for my M57 no-dash and I couldn't be happier with either set.
