Wood grips. Checkered or smooth?

Hello all. I am thinking about putting some wood grips on my Sig 226. Would you choose checkered or smooth and for what reasons? Also, what is your favorite wood for grips?

Sling Shot, like a fool, a friend of mine with small hands has a Sig P226 with Pachmyr rubber grips on it. I traded grips with him for my factory grips. I did not like the Pachmyr grips and bought a set of checkered Eagle grips. I have used these for several years and recently found a sale on factory rubber grips. I bought them and I am back where I started from but I prefer factory grips on my Sigs. Regards, Richard.

I'd prefer smooth. I'd take a wire brush and "bring out" the grain just a bit, a little tung oil to seal the wood.

Smooth cocoabolo wood; as it would enhance
any handgun, particulary a Sig.

Checkered. If you live in Florida and shoot out in the heat you know why I say this. Sweaty hands and smooth grips don't cut it at all.

anyone know where i can purchase some smooth (or even checkered) wood grips for my Sig 225 (besides the factory ones)?

It's smooth for me. I've got a pair made from Pau Ferro on my carry 1911.

I can appreciate all the arguments for using checkered grips to negate the affects of wet hands, but you are supposed to have a FIRM grip on the piece in the first place and a serrated mainspring housing and checkered/stippled front strap do more than checkered grips to facilitate that grip IMHO.

If you're not a little upset with the way the world is going, you're not paying attention.

If you carry IWB, it won't take long to appreciate smooth-as-glass grips. My frontstrap is skateboard taped and the MSH has chekering.

it may sound goofy but for my kimber elite i have three sets of grips; rubber, smooth rosewood, and checkered. the smooth shows off the wood character so much better so i put smooth side on the left and checkered on the right. hey its my gun i can do what i want. wyatt

For autopistol, checkered.
For revolver, smooth. Except MAYBE for front edge.

Can't explain it, but I've worked at it for thirty years now and it works.
