is it possible to change the color of the wood stocks on my 870 to tactical black?
i like the look of black stocks but dont want sythetics.
is there a finish that must be removed before i stain it? any other prep needed?
A light sanding and a coat of flat black paint should get you fixed right up. A friend did this on a beater gun and used flat black lacquer. Looked exactly like synthetic.
Brownells is a gunsmith supply company that has just about anything you can think of and more. In particular, a black paint that dries to a sort of non-slip surface which is ideal for what you want too do. Log onto: http://www.brownels.com and order a copy of their latest catlog.
I've used an ebony stain to get the wood ebony black, then refinished it with a Tru oil type finish. It was beautiful because the grain still showed, but had that black "tactical" look that I craved in the waning days of my youth. I'm going back to natural wood in my incipient middle age.
Minwax makes a stain that will get your stocks pretty black without having that "painty" look
PS: Yes, you'll have to remove the original finish. Some say that Remingtons finish won't come off with regular paint remover...I've never had that problem, Jasco worked on my factory finish.
