Woman stabbed to death by ex, while waiting for CCW

Imagine knowing your life is in danger by a crazy, felonious, angry x-boyfriend...

Now imagine that you've done everything you can, by law, to defend your life and your last resort is to apply for a concealed carry permit because you know in your heart you're going to need it...

Now... imagine being stabbed to death in your driveway waiting for the state to approve your concealed carry permit!

I sure hope there are more people out there that are outraged by this story, like I am. Because my blood is boiling that our state and even federal government is restricting too many of us from our constitutional rights and it's causing good, innocent people to lose their lives.

That happened in the next town from me and I think the story is a little inaccurate. She wasn't waiting for a concealed carry permit, she was waiting for a permit to purchase a handgun. You can legally carry a handgun here on your own property, but she didn't have the gun yet. And she was killed in her own driveway.

Otherwise, yeah, it sucks.

Where are all the liberal groups that demand the right to do all kind of vile things when it comes to the right to protect your family and self ? Where are all the politicians that promise to make everyone safer by changing the way Americans view firearms ?

They are the ones that put the purchase permit process into law and maintain that it works as intended.

Not even waiting on a State issued carry permit, but just PERMISSION to purchase a firearm!!!

Sounds like her rights were "infringed"

I haven't read the article, but I'm not biting on this story. Here's why. I've owned guns long before I had a carry permit. When on my own property, I never felt like I couldn't have one of my guns with me. When driving in a car, I kept a loaded firearm locked in my glove box. If I needed it, I would have used it.

So, this lady is in fear for her life by a crazy X, and the ONLY thing that stopped her from being able to defend herself on her own property was a conceal carry permit? I just don't figure it that way.

After reading the article, the author clearly said she was waiting for a conceal carry permit.

The woman wasn't waiting for a carry permit. When she was murdered, she was waiting for a permit to purchase a handgun which is required in New Jersey.

Here is a better article: link

Skans, if you look at the bottom of the article, you can see the authors name, she is also listed on the "bio" page. The author is not a journalist, she is a blogger, and got her facts wrong.

The woman who was shot was named Carol Browne... from New Jersey. She was waiting on her pistol purchase permit, not her CCW... you can access the forms here:
http://www.state.nj.us/njsp/info/forms.html#firearms

Somebody from NJ might chime in, but I think the state has up to 30 days to process the permit... reality is however that forms take much longer.

Yes, those of you who corrected what permit she was waiting for are correct. When I originally wrote the blog, it was reported that she was waiting for a concealed carry permit and then, yes, came out later that it was simply a permit to purchase the handgun.

Complete F-up on my part and I apologize for not checking the facts before posting.

However, having said that - it makes it even worse - she couldn't even buy the handgun yet .. Sharkbite had it right, her rights were already infringed!

And Skans - I agree, even when I lived in CA, I always had my firearm with me (even though I wasn't suppose to), but I wasn't willing to put my children's life in jeopardy because my constitutional rights were being stepped on. I would gladly take the jail time for illegally carrying the gun if it ever came to that.

However, some people are not as willing to break the law in that manner and want to do it the right way.

Either way, thanks all for the comments and the correction - I absolutely love to blog about our 2nd Amendment rights, our constitution and how the current administration is constantly stepping on those rights; however, I am not perfect and I sometimes make mistakes and blog inaccurate information - so I thank you all for the corrections and bringing it to my attention!

God Bless and happy shooting :)

The 2nd Amendment is not treated the same across the Country . Here I pick a firearm , type in my info , clerk does the BG check , completes the form . If the computer system is working well I leave in 30 miniutes . Some Nanny states see it differently . It could be better but I think if the fire arm laws were to be revisited the result would be more restrictive than ever .

In my state, I go to the gun store, pick out a gun, show my carry permit, fill out the 4473, lay the money down, and leave with my gun. No background check necessary with my carry permit. Oh, and if I'm short on ammo, I grab a thousand rounds and get it all in the same transaction. Typically done in about 15 minutes. :D

According to news reports, she had been waiting over two months for permission to buy a handgun. NICS is able to do most background checks in just a few minutes. It's outrageous that a law abiding citizen in New Jersey has to wait months to exercise her rights.

Well, that makes more sense.

If the agency in New Jersey that is responsible for issuing permits to purchase a gun intentionally delayed that permit for some reason outside of the scope of the permit law, I would think that the responsible agency and/or the individuals involved in the delay could be slapped with a big fat wrongful death lawsuit. When government agents willingly break the law or act outside of the law, they are no longer protected by sovereign immunity.

Skans, the agency responsible for issuing permits is a combination of State Police and local police, plus whoever is responsible for the required mental health background check (may be state police). Plus, in order to get a permit to purchase any firearm, fingerprints are required and sent to state police or FBI. Any lawsuit against any of those isn't gonna get very far.

To purchase any firearm or ammo you need a Firearm Purchaser ID Card. Initially its a pita but after that, no problem. Rifles & shotguns no problem. Additionally, to buy a handgun you have to go thru the bs previously noted. That's why, if I want to buy another handgun, I might as well get 3 or 4.

This is a truly unfortunate event. However, any claim that the state was culpable is a stretch.

If they insist on keeping the Graves Act, I'd at least like to see a system that fast-tracks the process for people with restraining orders.

Then again, this is New Jersey, and...well, we've had enough New Jersey bashing on the forum this week.
