This article comes verbatium from my local paper:
700-POUND TIGER MAULS WOMAN AT IDAHO EVENT
BOISE,IDAHO--A woman was mauled by a 700 pound tiger at a fund-raiser for Zoo Boise after the big cat slipped through a cage door. Janet Gold,40, suffered a broken leg and puncture wounds in the attack and was hospitalized in serious ut stable condition Saturday, authorities said. Gold also suffered a gunshot wound to the leg when police fired near the tiger to scare it away. The attack occured at an event titled (get this) "FEAST FOR THE BEAST"!
Hey, I don't make this stuff up, truth is stranger than the MMM.

I was there.

The woman who was mauled was inside the cage. She was part of an impromptu tour of the new tiger facilities. The zoo personnel were "pretty sure" that the tiger was locked up inside the adjacent building .

The tiger was killed. The officer who fired was off duty and was also a member of the tour. The bullet that hit the woman was a ricochet and did little damage.

Just another stupid event in a pretty stupid town.

Just to correct, coverage from today's Boise paper said the tiger was unhurt. In fact, it was one of twin tigers and the keepers don't know for sure which Tiger did the mauling.

Bizzare happening!

Kudos to the LEO who held his ground, fired in the air to make the tiger retreat, then fired again when it began to advance again. It appears the bullet wound to the woman's leg was a ricochet--not surprising considering the LEO fired in a concrete enclosure. But he almost certainly saved her life. Everyone else in the tour panicked and ran.

That's what the paper reports, anyway. Any correction from the eyewitness would be welcome.

In Marin County, CA, a woman jogger was mauled and killed by a catamount. Hunters were brought and slew it. In kiling it, cubs were found. Well, there was a fundraiser for the woman's family and another by the animal rights folks for the cubs. The cubs got more $. Waddaya expect from Californians?

Thanks for the correction Dave R. I was at the other end of the zoo downing my 12th beer when the event went down. I only heard the rumors that quickly spread throughout the park. Fox 12 news reported the next morning that the tiger was destroyed.

I'm glad to hear that a tiger didn't need to die just for being a tiger.

What makes this funny is that a fundraiser was being held for the tigers called Feast for the Beast. I love the irony.

This kinda reminds me of the time a few years ago, when an attendant at Kings Island amusement park, here in Ohio, was in the lions and big cat enclosure feeding the animals. This less than brilliant person decided to take a "dump" while in the enclosure. The restroom must have been too far away!
You guessed it!!! Lion killed the dumba$$!
Don't know about the lion cage, but the human gene pool is a little cleaner.

As I type this, I'm listening to a local Boise radio station, re this topic. No, the tiger wasn't hurt, but the discussion is whether or not to kill the tiger, because he has now "got the blood lust." You know, chowing down on "long pig". Seems to me, that the tiger should not be killed for the incredible stupidity of bliss ninnies, who left the tigers' cage door open and unlocked.

But, bliss ninnies are never responsible for their own actions, are they? J.B.

JRR thanks for giving the straight scoop on this one. What I liked was the personnel were "pretty sure" the tiger was locked up. One wonders if we all had the same attitude about gun safety, yeah I'm pretty sure it's not loaded. What morons! With a stunt like that she deserves to be cat chow!

Actually, the woman who was mauled was an innocent visitor to the zoo merely taking a private tour led by the zoo's administrator. She had every right to expect that he safety would be assured (at least from tigers anyway). She did nothing wrong.

One of the zoo personnel (possibly the admin himself) left an access gate unlocked and the tiger was able to force it open as the tour walked by.

As it turns out, the zookeeper in charge of the tigers and his assistant both decided to take a vacation on the day of the zoo's biggest event of the year. This left the zoo admin in charge of feeding the tigers that day and about 1000 other things he doesn't do regularly. I'm not trying to defend the guy, responsibility is responsibility, but I can kinda feel for him a bit. Currently, he's been put on paid leave to "deal with the trauma."

I'm not sure that this is one of those finger-pointing, "we're smarter than you are" type of things. I think it's just another big f***'d up deal where no one wins and no one feels good.
