Wolf Ammo & 1911s

Thanks for the warning. I was about to buy a case for a class. I guess I'll feed my Kimber Fiocchi instead.

As far as cheap plinking ammo goes, it's ok. I am shooting my way through a case right now. Yeah, it's not the best, but for just sending lead down range at a can, or a milk carton, it can't be beat. I agree with George. It is second rate, but it has it's uses.

G3,

I don't know what kind of 1911 you have but consider the following:

Generally, 1911's cost quite a bit. When you invest that kind of money into your gun, why shoot crap ammo through it?

I'm sure its been stated here before, but I'll ask anyway: what sort of problems have been experienced with Wolf .45 ammo?

And hey, whodathunkit? The russians build great subs, you'd think their ammo would be as high-quality. ;)

Coronach--

My biggest problem with Wolf ammo is that it is FILTHY. Without a doubt it leaves more powder residue in 9mm than any other ammo I've shot. 20 rounds thru a gun and it looks like you've been in a 72 hour firefight...

Because of my bad experience with a couple hundred rounds of 9mm (bought it cheap--no wonder), I've never shot their .45acp stuff. And I never will.

PS--that's a GREAT tag line you've got there. Which Heinlein novel is it from?

I don't have a 1911, but shoot a lot of 45 Wolf in a Ruger P90, and EAA Witness, and 9mm in P89, P95, and Carbine. It works fine for me. It is dirty but I don't care. I clean my guns after every shoot anyway. It's plenty accurate and reliable in the guns I shoot for banging plates, IDPA, and run & gun fun shoots. If I had a $2000 race gun, I would not shoot that ammo in it, but for utility guns like mine, it does the job quite well.

The quote of Heinlein is from one of the Lazarus Long books. It was in the "QUOTE BOOK OF LAZARUS LONG" (I think that was the title anyway.)

The problems with the Wolf ammo, is it with the .45 ACP only, pistol ammo only or with its entire line (for example, 7.62x39 "AK" ammo)?

The quote is from "Time Enough for Love," I believe (I'm pretty darned sure) and, as was said, it was from the section entitled 'The Notebooks of Lazarus Long.' There are a number of darned good little snippets in that section, that quote being one of the best.

TANSTAAFL! :D

Thanks for the replies re: the ammo. So its just cruddy in general and dud-prone? Thats fine. I clean my guns often and this will make me do malfunction drills. ;) I was hoping (since I just bought 2 cases of it from www.cheaperthandirt.com) that it wasn't wildly loaded or anything...the last thing I want to do is start putting dangerously hot ammo through any gun I own.

Thanks,
Mike

I've bought Wolf ammo for my after ban Tec-9 (so what if it's called an AB-10). I've had a few feed problems with it, but I can't tell if it's the cheap ammo or cheap gun. Of course, I can buy Winchester 115 FMJ for about half a buck more a box at Wal Mart.

This is why I shop at Wal Mart:

I've checked both boxes of Winchester 115 grain FMJ at a local gun store and a Wal Mart, and as far as I know, it is exactly the same ammo, but wal mart sells theirs for 6.96 and the gun store @ 10.99.

I thought maybe the gun store was selling Win Cleans, but it wasn't. Even if they were, Win Cleans at Wal Mart are 8.96.

I use their AK ammo and love it, Yes it is dirty, but then again the PMC I have shot thru my Ruger and my Daly weren't particularly clean either. I would like to try their 9mm loadings however.

Is PMP (military, not commercial) ammo for pistols (9mm Parabellum) and rifles (5.56x45mm and 7.62x39mm) as dirty as Wolf ammo in the same calibers?

I noticed that they are about the same in price, yet PMP is brass-cased unlike the Wolf (steel-cased).

FWIW I have put about 500 rounds of Wolf 9mm through my HP clone and it likes it. I don't notice it to shoot dirtier than most, but I clean after every sesion, anyway. I've had a couple boxes where the cartridges were pretty dirty outside. As is, they were packed in a pretty dirty environment. But I do like the way they shoot.

Wolf 9x19 mm works just fine in CZ-75B.
I guess it's not the best ammo in the world, (just kidding) but I also guess it should work fine in any well designed pistols. 150 rounds went through CZ w/o single problem. Groups were approx. 50-60% bigger than when
I've used Fiocchi or GECO (my favorites). BTW, PMP seems to be more accurate, but
Wolf is much, much hotter.

I don't remember if it was Wolf ammo or not, but several years ago I shot a case of 22 rimfires that were Russian manufacture with steel cases. The stuff was dirty, but it was accuarate and reliable. I shot it in competition for both pistol and light rifle and it grouped as well or better than the PMC that we were also shooting. I never got any sense that the residue in the barrels was causing any accuracy problems, it just looked bad. It was good stuff, if I ever see any more of it I'll buy it in a heartbeat.
