Wnichester Model 70 questions....

My wife and I were at Wal-mart last night and as usual we cruised through the sporting goods section. They had the Winchester Model 70 on sale for $350. It was the one with the synthetic stock and it came with a (i think) Simmons scope. They've got them in all the calibers (.30-06, .270, .300, and 7mm Mag). My wife says, "is that what you want for Christmas?" My jaw drops in amazement :D Which one should I get?

Most of my hunting is 200 yards or less. White tail deer, ferral hogs, bobcat, etc. Also some 300-400 yard plinking.

thanks

The .270 or .06. Lots of good loads out for both, save your shoulder the recoil of the other two, plus the first two calibers should fit your bill.

For all that I'm a life-long "06er", I got good use out of a .270 I once had.

For the varieties of hunting that you describe, I'd suggest getting into handloading. Regardless of which cartridge you choose, you can shoot a heckuva lot more if you roll your own.

I guess I'd give the edge to the '06, just because of the variety of bullets you can shoot. I've loaded round lead ball for squirrel, hot 110-grain for jackrabbits and coyotes, and 150-grain for deer. And, you can go to 165s or 180s for elk; 220s are what I hear most folks use for moose if the '06 is what they've got.

Enjoy,
