Witness in 38 Super

I use a full size EAA Witness in .38 Super; my wife uses the polymer compact. It's a matter of hand size. Both guns are accurate and readily consume a wide variety of hand loads (fast/slow, heavy/lite, cast/jacketed) without indigestion. Less fussy for us than the 9mm's. We're not competative shooters, i.e. we don't usually load up to IPSC major, but it looks like we've gone through a few boxes of primers, 10k's here, 10k's there (count confused by a few other cartidges). I remember drifting the rear site on the full size when I first got it, no other work or problems.

How does the 38 Super measure up to the 9mm, 357 or 40 cal ? I've heard that it's a pretty hot cartridge but don't know anything about it.

How hot is the .38 Super?

Hotter than .38 Special +P or 9x19, but comfortably controllable. Not as hot as the .357 Mag, which I prefer to shoot in a lever action rifle. I don't have personal experience with the .40 S&W but comparing loading data in the 135-146 grain bullet wts. suggests to me that it would be between the .38 Super and the .357 Mag, with the ability to handle heavier loads. An interesting comparison would be between .38 Super, 9x21, 9mm Largo and 9mm Win Mag. Anyone able to comment?

Don't forget the 9x23 Win. when comparing. I may be wrong, but I believe it is very comparable to the 357 Mag. At least mine seems does..:D

DOH!

Mine is awesomely accurate and reliable, but it's top secret so the price of mags stays low.

Correct ammo allows multiple tasking, including taking small game (including deer, given correct bullet and impact velocity and placement).
