Witness Conversion kit - Fitting required?

I first posted this in the semi-auto forum. I probably should have put it here:

I bought an EAA/Tanfoglio Witness Elite Match in 9mm about a year and a half ago. It's been a great gun (especially since I started using Mec-Gar mags).

I decided to get a .40 S&W conversion kit for it just in case I decide to some competitive shooting at "major" power.

I ordered the kit on line from EAA and initially, they sent the wrong one: it was a "regular" slide in wonder finish instead of the Match slide. I tried the slide on the gun anyway but it was too tight and did not slide freely. I sent that one back and they exchanged it for the Match kit which arrived today.

Same story with the match slide: It slide about 1/3 of the way on just fine but then it gets tight, too tight to function properly.

I'm not sure if this is "normal" and maybe the kit is supposed to be "fitted" by a gun smith, although I didn't see that anywhere on the EAA web site. Or, maybe it's just a bad part. The fact that both slides had the same issue makes me think both slides probably aren't "bad" but I really don't know.

Anybody out there had to (or not had to) fit a Witness conversion kit?

Yup!

I just got off the phone with EAA and they confirmed that the slide needs to be fitted to the frame. It would have been nice if they mentioned that on their web site...

Anybody know a good pistolsmith in the Mpls/St. Paul area?
