Doyle urges fight against gun lobbyists

Madison - Attorney General James Doyle on Wednesday encouraged an anti-gun violence task force to take a stand against handgun lobbyists who oppose restrictions on firearms.

"A lot of people feel very frustrated because they see a very organized political lobby on the other side," Doyle told members of the Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort.

"But the answer is not to bemoan the fact that the (National Rifle Association) is a well-organized political force. Instead, become educated about the issue of gun violence and become a counterforce to that."

Doyle was keynote speaker at a WAVE planning session as the group of public and private safety organizations wraps up work on efforts to privately fund a full-time staff to work on public policy issues involving gun violence.

Instead of lobbying for gun control, WAVE focuses on issues such as public health, law enforcement and product liability, said Jeri Bonavia, WAVE's president.

"With 220 million guns in the U.S., banning guns is not a solution we're promoting. But we want to look at the different types of methods to prevent firearm violence," Bonavia said.

Just as changes in public perception got carmakers to build safer vehicles and drug companies to market tamper-resistant packaging, WAVE wants gun manufacturers to produce safer products, said John Engel, project director.

But the head of the Wisconsin Pro-Gun Movement said that while WAVE may claim it doesn't want to ban guns, it will do anything it can to limit gun ownership short of ridding the state of firearms.

"This group grew from the ashes of the group that failed to get guns banned in Milwaukee and Kenosha several years ago. They won't go away," said James Fendry.
