Wiping down ENTIRE XDm 9mm with Hoppes #9 bore cleaner

I bought hoppes universal pistol cleaning kit and cleaned out the bore with the Hoppes 9 gun bore cleaner. Then I wiped down the entire pistol lightly with it before applying the Hoppes #9 lubricating oil. Is the bore cleaner really bad even for the metal areas of the gun? I didn't use it on any of the polymer parts of course.

The hoppes should not hurt the finish on any of the metal. Just make sure you get rid of any excess and make sure you do not get much on the polymer. They say plymer frames are chemical proof/resistant but I have seen some really nasty gun cleaners take the stain/varnish right off of wood stocks.

Hoppies?

Used over 60yrs.and no issues.BUT I use it Mainly as a bore and cylinder cleaner. As has been said,Wipe Off Excess, and watch out for any wood. You'll be ok,:)and don't you love that smell!!

cleaning with hopes no 9 won't hurt the finish. I agree with others who say not to use foaming bore cleaner on the exterior.

Following with oil is good, too.

I heard a rumor that Hoppes can damage chrome and or nickel plating through prolonged contact so I emailed Hoppes directly with that question, here is their reply:

"Prolonged contact with nickel or chrome is not recommended with any Hoppe’s solvent. Most steel are flash plated with copper because the chrome/nickel plating adhere better to copper than the bare steel. If there is even the slightest scratch, nick, void etc. in the chrome/nickel platting, hoppe’s solvents will penetrate the flaws and dissolve the underlying copper substrate and cause the chrome/nickel plating to chip and peel further."

Skeets, I'm guessing you haven't bought the "bore cleaner" version of #9 recently. It smells totally different from the Hoppe's #9 powder solvent that I also loved. Not so much any more with the new formulation. Another memory of my youth passes into oblivion...

Do not use the foaming bore cleaner on anything except the bore... Tore the finish up pretty bad on the exterior surface of my Sig...i will never use it again at all

I would also agree with the sentiment, if it says "Bore Cleaner" only use it on the bore.

If you want something that you can use to wipe the entire gun down with, most CLPs work good for that purpose.

If you were to do what you did with something like, Sweet's bore cleaner... you would have destroyed your finish.

I've used Hoppes #9 for over 20 years (recently switched to M-Pro 7 because it works better, cleans up better, and the smell isn't as obnoxious) and it has never damaged any metal finish on any firearm.

There is no harm in using it to clean dirty metal parts outside of the bore, such as frames, mag wells, locking blocks, lugs, slides, etc.

It will not damage the polymer frames of any modern pistols. It will, however, damage the "over-molded" type plastic/rubber grips lots of folks use.

Hoppes #9 bore cleaner will not harm the finish of your gun.

When I clean a handgun, I use a toothbrush to scrub the entire gun. I don't leave it on there; not because I am worried about the finish of the gun, but because I am using it to clean powder fouling and what-not from the gun, so I want to get rid of all the foreign substances on my gun. After I have scrubbed the whole gun with a toothbrush and Hoppes, I hose down the gun with something like brake parts cleaner or a commercial gun cleaning spray. Then I get rid of that with compressed air and a rag.

Long story short, it won't harm the finish of your gun.
