winter project - Remington 788

I really like my Remington 788 .30-30.

Right now, it's iron sights - but I"m leaning toward adding a scope.

I'm a Burris fan (they're in Colorado).

The 788 is already drilled for scope mounts.

What parts do I need?

yup - and it's the "base" and "rings" parts that have me most confused. Hell of a lot of options, out there!

My scope will be a simple Fullfield II.

Just assume using 100% burris, although I like Redfield parts, as well.

You might want to check and see who is still making stuff for the 788 . You would be fine with a Weaver setup , base and Rings . Burris has good hardware , all steel and twice the cost of Weaver .

Burris has a number of alloy ring configurations, which I find to be just fine. But they aren't all steel, as you said.

A nice one piece base for your 788:

Do NOT get the 20MOA version of the base. With a 30-30, you don't need an additional 20" of elevation for your scope.

These Burris rings work very well. I've been using them on one of my AR-15s and also my Savage 10 FCP .308 bolt gun with great success. They are alloy and they lap very nicely should you decide to go that route.

Here is a write-up on scope ring lapping that I did some time ago, using the above mentioned rings. I use an EGW base on my Savage rifle. I've had zero problems with it.....shooting a .45" 5 shot group @ 100 yds and a .86" 4 shot group @ 200yds this past weekend.

All in all, very reasonably priced scope mounting hardware that yields excellent results.

Bailey Bud, one word of caution, there are 2 bases for the 788, long and short and it differs by caliber even though all of the calibers available appeared the same. Just make sure you get the correct one the first time. Check Brownells as they list which base fits each caliber.
