Wingmaster 870 2 3/4" shotguns

In searching the gun auction web pages for Remington Wingmaster 870's, I've noticed a number of them described as 2 3/4" only. What if anything does this say about the shotgun's date of manufacture?

Thanks,
Ed

I believe the switch to 3" shotguns, except for specialty 870s like trap guns, occurred in the 70s.

Unless you have a real need for 3" shells for turkey or waterfowl, the 2 3/4" chambered 870s will serve well as all around shotguns.

The four 12 ga 870s here are equally divided. My oldest, the one used for HD, and the newest, my trap 870 TB, are 2 3/4". The others, my deer shotgun and Frankenstein, are 3".

While a shotgun chambered for 3" does have slightly more versatility as to ammo, an 870 in decent shape with the shorter chamber at the right price is a lot of gun for the money.
