winclean and storage for S&W snubbie?

I inherited my grandfather's 1947 S&W 2 1\2 inch barrel revolver. It was perfect when I got it at 16 and when I became educated about guns at 44 it had some rust on the cylinder from being in a leather holster all that time and from never being cleaned. I used 0000 steel wool and clp and gently cleaned off the surface rust and now I want to keep it as nice as possible for my oldest son. How should I store this heirloom without a dehumidified safe and is WINCLEAN ok to shoot in it? I have read on other forums that winclean was not so good for semi-autos. Thank you for any suggestions.

Any modern ammo of the correct caliber should be okay to shoot in the pistol. Stay away from hot +P loads if you don't want to wear it out prematurely. If you are concerned about the ammo, just clean the pistol after you shoot it. Winclean is a little dirty, in my experience, but I always clean my pistols after a day at the range anyway.

If you take a look at Cabela's and some of the other shooting supply stores you can buy a plastic bag that is specially treated to keep the inside of the bag very dry. I have a couple of these that I used to store seldom fired pistols in when I lived in the south (NC) and they never rusted. Mine are a very heavy (relative to a sandwich bag) plastic and they have a zip lock similar to a sandwich bag. They come in many sizes and are relatively inexpensive ($5 to $10 each).

If you are going to shoot the pistol once in a while, get a Reel Rag or the gun variety of this silicone treated cloth. Wipe the pistol down after shooting or cleaning and then store it in the rust proof plastic bag.

Your pistol should last a good long time.

Why would Winclean be bad for a semi-auto???

I have shot over 500 rounds in my Taurus PT-111 no less!

It seems to keep my gun cleaner that anything else I have used. As I start shooting more outdoors I will be using more of the Winchester "100 round Value Pak" though - only because of the price.

I've never tried it, but it would seem one of those "Food Saver" devices you see advertised on TV would be excellent for storage.

Sealed in a vacuum sounds like a great idea.

Thank you..

Ordered several bags for not only my revolver but M1 and carbines too. Kleen Bore makes them. Got them from Natchez. Do any of you have experience with these rust inhibiting bags? Will they damage the wood grips and stocks? Thanks for the suggestions. I did not know these things existed until this thread.

I like the WinClean ammo! I find that my guns are much cleaner after shooting with WinClean, then when I use anyother regular ammo. WinClean Makes cleanup a hole lot easier. ;)

I was looking through my safe the other day and Kleen Bore is the maker of the bags.

These are the ones I used in North Carolina. I also kept a dissicant in the bottom of my gun safe.

Between that and the bags and an occasional wipe with a reel rag I never got a blemish in a couple of years of storage and the wood on my grips was never harmed.
