WinClean ammo

I got a box of this stuff from walmart the other day and I didn't like it.

It was alright for accuracy/plinking. I didn't like the horrendus flash and the unburnt powder left in the barrel.

(6in 686 btw)

Also after I got home and looked at the spent brass, I noticed that all of the primers flattened out against the back of the case.
Should I be concerned about this or is it something to do with the "cleanliness" of this ammo?

The primer went from a clearly defined cup to a flattened silver without the indentation into the case. The firing pin marks were still there.

Hard to tell much because of lack of ballistics data on the WinClean. (Winchester says "TBA" for the fps, fpe, etc., on the 357 Sig, 9mm Luger -- didn't find a 357 Mag Winclean) Flash from a 6" barrel and flattened primers suggests a hot load.

I think their bragging about this stuff being "clean" is based on no lead in the bullet or primer instead of it leaving your gun cleaner than with other ammo.

I shoot Winclean in 9mm and .38 Special. It seems to keep my guns a lot cleaner than most anything else I shoot.

- And there is lead in the bullitt. In the 9mm, I know that even the base of the bullitt is covered by the jacket. (BEB - Brass enclosed base).

Also, I think they use no heavy metals (like Mercury) in the primers of the Winclean ammo.

FWIW

I knew the clean refered to the environmental aspect, I was just making fun at the ammo's expense.

Wouldn't it be abnormal for cheaper rounds to be that hot?

I was just hoping there wasn't anything bad going down.

To make a "horrendous flash" from a 6" barrel? I'd think so, but I've never fired WinClean.

Maybe Win uses a different, slower powder for WinClean or something. Need that ballistics data!

To me, Winclean ammo seems reasonably cheap, seems to keep my guns fairly clean and I have not noticed any unusual flash or recoil. (I am using 115 gr 9mm and I THINK .38 special is 124 gr - not positive). I pay $8.99 or less for box of 50 (9mm).

Like I said in my previous post, keeping the base of the bullitt completely enclosed by the jacket minimizes lead vaporization from the bullitt. That combined with heavy-metal free primers should keep "pollution" down near the gun when fired.

I seem to remember that the ballistic data is fairly "average". -Nothing remarkable that I remember anyway.

I will try to post ballistic data if I can find it. (I think I have it at home.)

If the WinClean ballistics data is "fairly average," I doubt that there's anything remarkable about the flash different from any other non +P load.

I shoot the winclean 38'salot and don't mind them...but I tried the 357's last week, under a tin roof at the out door range, the muzzle flash and "blow back" was weird.I felt the blow back onmy face!I had really hot 357's I was shooting and they didn't have nearly the same feel of stuff bowing onto my face.....probaly won't be getting many more aftr these are gone...I kind of stock piled them when they were on sale so I've a few boxes left...some one said because th pwder burns faster it's cleaner and thus the blow back....

Here is the data I have on Winclean Ammo. I have added data on Winchester Silvertips for comparison.

9mm Winclean:

115 gr Muzzle Velocity: 1190 FPS Muzzle Energy: 362 ft-lbs

9mm Winchester Silvertip:

115 gr Muzzle Velocity: 1225 FPS Muzzle Energy: 383 ft-lbs

38 Special Winclean:

125 gr Muzzle Velocity: 775 FPS Muzzle Energy: 167 ft-lbs

38 Special Winchester Silvertip

110 gr Muzzle Velocity: 945 FPS Muzzle Energy: 218 ft-lbs

It doesn't appear to be particularly "hot" as far as I can tell. Hope this helps. This is from the Winchester Handgun Ballistics on page 474 of the Shooter's Bible (No. 93 2002 Edition)

Thanks, Logistar.

The 9mm comparison is handy since the bullet weights are the same. It looks like the WinClean may be using a slower burning powder, which would account for the lower energy and velocity, but the differences are small and probably insignificant.

The 38 Special data isn't helpful in guessing because the bullet weights are different.

Oh, well. Maybe WinClean just as more flash in hot loads like .357 Mag as ENC and TonyB are reporting.

I like the Win-Clean ammo, becouse it makes cleaning my guns easy. I know I would never use it for self-defense, but it makes great practice ammo.
