WHat seems to be the best value pistol ammo in 9mm, 40S&W, and 45ACP at the Wal-Mart I go to is the Winchester WinClean. For those that don't know, instead of a copper jacket they use brass, and it is put on the bullet backwards. This leaves the tip as exposed lead, but wraps the base. It is supposed to keep lead from fouling your barrel. Has anyone done any ballistic or penetration testing on these rounds? I am curious as if they act more like a Full Metal Jacket, Semijacked Soft Point, or a Semijacketed Hollow Point. Any feedback on this ammo would be greatly appreciated!

I haven't done any tests with WinClean, but I sure have shot my share of it! 9mm Luger's usually what goes out of my barrel, and I have been buying WinClean for over nine months now. I prefer it to any other brand I've used.

I've been shooting the 180gr .40 WinClean ammo for a few months now. The name fits--it really is clean. The fired brass comes out a lot cleaner than other practice ammo I've tried--almost no residue. Compare this to UMC, which comes out black inside. I haven't done any penetration tests or anything, though.

Another observation, all of the bullets that I recovered in any of my sessions had separated jackets. Not too surprising, considering the BEB design. I don't think it makes any difference for practice ammo, but I'm not sure what it means if it was used for other purposes.

Anyway, I now prefer WinClean over the other selections found at my local WalMart.

I do not like it. I shot some of it out of my Glock 30 and accuracy was awful, but it was clean. I also noticed that it was underpowered compared to Speer Lawman and UMC. The 30 cycled it without a hitch, but I will not buy it again -- not for this 30 anyhow. Sling Shot

I agree with Slingshot, I've bought my share of WinClean at Walmart and while the ammo is indeed clean, it's accuracy has not been up to par. Using WinClean .45 in my Beretta Cougar made a huge difference in my groups (for the worse) as did the 9mm stuff in my CZ-75B. Give me the good ol' Winchester USA FMJ's when Walmart's got 'em in stock--$6.96 for 50 9mms--and you can keep the WinCleans.

Same results here.
fired from a Glock 30 and Ruger P97 with very poor groupings (over 5" at 15 yrd).

It just goes to show you there is no perfect ammo for every gun. Of the standard factory ammo I buy in .45ACP I have found the Winclean to be the most accurate in all but one of the semiautos I have fired recently, whereas others here have had the opposite...

I was given a box of WINCLEAN 230 grain .45 ACP ammo. While it cycled fine in my G30 and was reasonably accurate I had 7 misfires out of a box of 50. All rounds had well centered firing pin hits and looked as if they were struck hard enough. I switched over to my handloads and had no more problems.

Since that time I have fired a combination of several hundred handloads and factory loads with no more problems.

No more WINCLEAN for me.

I did accuracy testing a couple of weeks ago with .38 spl in my .357 GP-100. Winclean was definitely the worst, so bad that I'm not going to shoot it anymore.

I must say it does shoot clean, the boresnake only needs to go thru once.
