Winchester Trapper .45 Colt

I'd prefer a Marlin, methinks, but the only Marlin in .45 Colt has like a 26" barrel, and that's 10" longer than I prefer in a lever action, pistol-caliber carbine.

Does anybody know what a good price for this is? Wal-Mart lists them in their catalog for $344.95, but it takes *weeks* (according to the clerk) for Wally World to get guns it orders. I'd sooner have an FFL order one straight from Winchester.

Also, does anybody know where I can get a large, "rifleman" loop for one?

Finally, does anybody have any idea why Winchester puts that spring-loaded slack in their triggers these days? Anybody?

FFL's order from...

...distributors, not from Winchester. ;) If you find out when your local shop places its weekly (or bi-weekly or whatever) order and show up with a deposit in hand on that day, they'd probably be happy to tack one on the list for you.

I like my '94 Trapper in .45 Colt. Shoots nicely w/both CCI Blazer 200gr JHP's and Georgia Arms 260gr JHP's.

It's going to come down to...

...either this or the Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag. I durn near bought a Marlin 1894 in .45-70 today, but alas, I cannot afford it and ammo is pricey.

It all depends on me, I think. I havne't decided which caliber I want yet, because it will correspond to a large double action revolver, a large single action revolver, and a Taurus snubbie (in .45 Colt or .44 Special). .45 Colt does have that somewhat "it's different!" appeal, though, seeing as how EVERYbody has .44 Magnum.

Unfortunatly you probably won't be able to beat the price at Wal Mart. On the other hand, if I ordered this from my dealer, and the distributor had it in stock, I would get it in two days. And I would be supporting a local guy that needs the money.
I have one of those big loops on mine. I don't like it, but I don't remember what I did with the factory one. I bought the loop at a local gun store when cowboy action shooting was just starting to get big. This was in excess of 10 years ago, closer to 15.
They are great guns and a lot of fun. I shot the hell out of mine for several years after I bought it. Several hundred rounds a week. I don't remember the last time I shot it now. I have always wanted to hunt with mine but have only used it to take small game. I don't really think it is suitable for deer hunting in the wide open spaces of Nevada although it certainly could be done if you were willing to risk coming home empty handed. I also debated taking it elk hunting. It would be great for javelina. That caliber is certainly capable of taking anything on this continent and most anything in the world. Hitting it would be the issue (past maybe 100-150 yards). I got a bobcat last week with a Rossi levergun in .45 Colt.

I've had bad luck with those Win '94 carbines. Lots of jams and terrible accuracy. I'm holding out for a short Marlin '94.

Love my Winchester 94 Trapper .45

Picked it up at a gunshow years ago, right after they first came out. Mine has beautiful wood--much better than I typically see on most production rifles. I have sometimes wondered if this one was not some early "display" or "marketing" gun.

Accuracy is adequate and although I had some feeding problems very early, these seem to have disapeared. It does very well in Cowboy Action Shooting matches and has taken several coyotes and similar sized animals very cleanly. I have no doubt it would do for one of our 90-130 lb. whitetail deer as long as I keep the range reasonable.
