Winchester Model 70 Question

I posted this in Harley Nolden's BB yesterday. Thought I might post it here too. Thanks for your help.

Do any of you good folks know if the Model 70 Super Grade was made in 7 mm Remington Mag prior to
1964? Fjestad's Blue Book is not definitive on this. After '64 there came the use of the prefix
appellation "Custom" in front of "Super Grade," but I'm not sure when exactly that occurred. My friend
has one and he's trying to figure out if it's pre '64 or not (there is a significant difference in value). His
serial number is G196XX. Also, the barrel engraved designation, "Super Grade," does not have the
word,"Custom," before it.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A good resource on Winchester information is the firearms museum in Cody, WY. The website is www.bbhc.org.

The do serial number searches for individuals for a price. I could not locate the 7mm in my info on the Pre-64 mod 70, and while I enjoy the gun alot, I am far from the expert on them.

Good luck

PKAY,

If the serial number starts with a G prefix it is a later M-70. To the best of my knowledge based on Roger Rule's book on M-70's, the pre-64 was never made in 7 mag.

The 7mm Rem. Mag. is not listed as one of the pre '64 Model 70 Calibers in Roger Rule's "The Rifleman's Rifle" (1996), so I take it that they do not exist chambered to this cartridge by the factory.
This cartridge was introduced in the push feed Model 70 in 1965.
