Still looking for a bolt action deer rifle. Visited Winchester website and either of these two rifles in .270 have suggested retail under $500. The Ranger is $496 and the Black Shadow is $462. Any opinions either way on either one? Thanks

Ahah! The Winchester 70 in .270 "The Riflemans Rifle" Now you're talking...

You have the right idea, however IMHO the "new post '94 claw extraction" design is far superior to the push feed models and some would argue it's even better than the vaunted pre '64 action.

Winchester totally replaced their tooling a while back with the latest CNC milling machines to gear up for the production of the Classic line and I believe the product was worth the trouble.

Be careful. Eventhough the Ranger and Black Shadow are in the "Classic" line up they may not sport "Classic actions" using instead the old push feeder actions...

The Classic claw actions demand a slight premium over the push feeders in the retail market. Say maybe 50 bucks- Next year, when you're fully appreciating the fine Classic actions merits, you won't even miss that 50... You should be able to pick up a Classic for around $500 if you look diligently and it will be a bargain.

If you want to really go for it, the Winchester 70 LT in .270 with the David Miller stock design is a mighty fine gun...

P.S. In your search should you come across a new Winchester 70 Classic Stainless in .308 drop me an email...
