Got this rifle and can't figure out a whole lot about it. It was manufactured in 1969. The rifle is 99%. It has a very sweet trigger. My book shows this rifle being made that year but not this caliber. For being 40 years old it is in excellent shape. I've searched up and down the internet trying to get an idea what its worth. If you have any imfo on this rifle please chime in.

the winchester should prove to be exceptionally accurate if te bore is in good condition, the 222 is an increadibly accurate cartridge, it held nearly all benchrest records for 100-200yd shooting for many years. i would suggest bullets of 50-55gr. it should prove to be a good chuck/prarrie dog/crow rifle, i have had several 222's, a pre64 model 70, a remington 722, and a savage 340D, all have been quite accurate, even the svage 340, which was designed to be a bragin rifle. good luck with the new rifle.

My friend shoots a Remington in .222. It is a very accurate round.

I've seen exactly one Model 70 in .222 caliber about 10 years ago. It had the standard barrel and was about 96% overall. Had the price been less than the $600 the guy wanted for it, it probably would be in my stable.
One thing you occasionally see is the factory puts out an oddball batch of rifles because they were using up parts they had sitting around. Barrels for the Model 70 were profiled, chambered, and roll-marked without ever being put on an action, so that batch of barrels could have been sitting in the warehouse for years before it got used up. The official factory offerings for that year may not have included the 222 Rem, but a distributor may have received a batch of rifles that were chambered for a dropped chambering.

i have a model 70 in 308 caliber i wouldnt use anything else for deer ,elk or even woodchucks its acurate light to carry and not bad for recoil ive checked my guns worth on guns america and its selling for 600- 1000 dollars of course mine is pre 64 though enjoy it its a work of art. oh i put a nice lupold scope on mine because the gun deserves a quality scope.

Since this is such an old thread, I don't know if anyone is still reading it, but I have a circa 1980ish Winchester 70, Heavy Barrel in Remington 222. It currently has a Leopod 6x18 scope. I bought three boxes of Federal and still have about 15 rounds left. Very Good Shape. Make me an offer.
