winchester model 62

Hello, I'm new to the forum and have a question for the old winchester experts. my dad has a winchester model 62 .22 short only gallery gun. It has the short forearm and triangle shaped loading port. It says winchester model 62 22 short only on the top of the barrel. So it should be a pre war gun, and the serial number should be 99,XXX or less. I also know that winchester only made 4XX,XXX model 62 rifles. So why does my dads gun have a 850,XXX serial number? Any ideas.......

Are you certain that the serial number is factory-applied? Keep in mind that IIRC it wasn't illegal to modify a gun's serial number around the time this rifle was produced.

Pictures would help.
