Winchester Model 61 pump rifle

My Winchester 61, which I got as a boy 50 years ago, has started to double feed. This results in a jam of unspent ammo. It seems the bullets just come freely from the magazine tube when I attempt to chamber a round. I've reviewed George Roghaar's instruction manual. He suggests you check the "cut off" (what ever the hell that is) in case of a double fee. I've removed the bolt, cleaned everything and see no apparent problems. Any thoughts on the double feed would be appreciated.

Looks like its to 'cut off' the next cartridge from coming out of the magazine tube when you work the action. There are complete assembly/disassembly guides on the net and places to order the parts. However, it might be worth it to take it to a gunsmith.

I have had a very old model 61 do the same thing. It was the cartridge cutoff. I replaced mine and everything works fine. Because of the close tolerences inside these grand guns, the cartridge cutoff could not be milled steel but stamped steel instead. These were thin and could wear out with extensive use. Good news is they are easy to replace, can be done in a few minutes.

You guys are great! You're both right on target. No question the problem is the cartridge cut off....in fact I can drop a round in the magazine and it falls freely past the cut off. I have removed the magazine and cut off. There is no pin or retainer clip to stop the cartridge. Could it have become worn and fallen out during the cocking action. That's what I'm guessing. Is there a blowup anywhere of the cut off? I'd like to see what the complete unit looks like. Thanks

cartridge cut-off components

I'm not sure what I need. Looking at parts at Numrich they have several options and only some of them are available. Since I have the main part that the cartridge slides through (see attached image) am I just in need of a clip or pin?
